So I have just reinstalled W7. Or at least I think I have. After all the reboots, after the boot loader screen, the monitor just goes blue with the HDMI no signal box on it. Any idea what the problem could be?

I tried that, it said it couldn't complete the W7 installation in safe mode and asked me to restart normally. On restarting normally it keeps going back to the same problem. So obviously it's stuck in the middle of setting W7 up for some reason.

OK I just did another installation. After the fifth and final 'completing installation' stage the computer reboots and just hands on the blue HDMI no signal screen. I did notice something slightly odd after one of the reboots. There was a screen which said - choose which OS you want to load, and it gave Windows 7 or Windows 7! Could the drive be strangely partitioned? Even though on the installation walkthrough it only saw one drive.

does your motherboard have onboard graphics? If it does I would remove your gfx card and reformat then reinstall again without it, seems like a problem with the gfx card to me.

Regarding two operating systems being listed, sounds like you didn't format the drive before installing again, therefore the first W7 install and the second W7 install files are on the same partition (the new one will be in a folder called windows(0) or something), and the boot.ini (well it's not that in W7 anymore, but the equivalent) has added the second W7 installation to the boot.ini list.

could you list your system specs?

Yes, it's an E6600 at stock, 4870 and 5GB of RAM. Motheboard is a GA DS3.

I just deleted the partition, formatted and reinstalled. Exactly the same problem.

I have no VGA cable or HDMI adapter so can't do it from the motherboard's onboard graphics.

I don't think this is a gfx card problem. I have a feeling it's a hard disk problem. W7 was behaving strangely - i.e. stalling a lot, hence the reason for the reinstall.

The bit that it's having difficulty with is "preparing Windows 7 setup for first usage".

Why 5gb of ram?

My first port of call would be get a normal ammount of ram in there, and try a non hdmi source.

After that, I'd suggest trying another hard drive

(Maybe try sata cables and Windows media first)

OK, I found the problem, turned out it was the gfx card after all.

I put an old x1950pro in and the installation completed with no problem. I then downloaded the latest ATi drivers and put in the 4870 again. Seems fine now. Weird that with the 4870 it couldn't just boot as standard but it could with an inferior [but still good] card.

Glad to hear its working now.

I had a smilier issue with my old laptop. i was installing win 7 and at the 'perping ur desktop' bit, the screen would go black

turns out i needed a bios update.

weird no?
