Hi guys,

Am really hoping someone can help me this as its doing my head in!!

I have been working on a friends daughters laptop as it was chock full of viruses, spyware, ad/malware etc. I finally managed to disinfect XP and it seemed to be running fine. Now when the machine boots up, XP loads and I get the Welcome screen. When I then click on the users name to logon, I see the desktop momentarily and I am then kicked back to the Welcome screen which displays the Logging Off message. It literally logs on and then logs off within about 2 seconds! I cannot get past this.

I have tried logging on as Administrator but get exactly the same problem.

I have also tried booting in Safe Mode and still get the same problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions for solving this probem or am I looking at a complete reinstallation of XP?? Typically its a cheap Acer laptop which apparently came with no recovery disks, XP disk etc.

If anyone can help I would be extremely grateful.

I have come across this issue a couple of times on different machines - not entirely sure what caused it in each case but I tried a lot of reg fixes in recovery console etc but nothing seemed to allow relogging in the profiles.

Ended up just reinstalling windows as it was an easier option than messing about troubleshooting!

Interested if you find a fix though!

I had this or similar on a friends laptop before, it would have been a virus/spyware whatever. As soon as I tried to log in it would kick me back out within seconds and say 'saving settings...'

I done whats in the link I'm certain it fixed it, was a while ago, think I used knoppix at the time to access the files. I only had to change a reg file so easy enough.

Can have a look at google results for more info if needed http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz=...chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=windows+xp+logs+in+logs+out

Sounds like it wants reinstalling. Once a system's had a severe malware infection, it's almost impossible to get it back to how it was before without reinstalling Windows. Probably quicker than rooting out all the spyware as well.

Format/Re-install is king. Get the model number of the laptop and try to find out if it has a recovery partition or not if there are no discs.

I hate the way manufacturers skimp on supplying discs. If your hard drive bites the dust what are you supposed to do? Not all of them prompt you to create your own recovery discs either. Its a joke.

Thanks for the replies guys. Had horrible feeling complete XP reinstall might be on the cards!!

On the off chance that the laptop does have a recovery partition, how do you access/use it??
