Hey guys, after my last thread I decided to just nab my dad's old hi fi.

It's a trio (Kenwood) 5010, and I love the looks.. really old with analogue watt meters etc.

However, the speakers I have really are terrible.


From the limited information I can find, it's 45W RMS @8ohm, or 50 at 4. ( http://www.hifigoteborg.se/Kenwood KR-5010 spec.htm I translated this with no knowledge of swedish though :o).


So, what speakers will work with this? Any ideas? I've seen the Celestion F15s, which seem quite reasonably priced, and even better if I manage to find some second hand. Ideally I'd like to spend £50-70 for the pair. I might stretch if they're amazing and guaranteed to work, but to be honest I doubt it would be worth it due to the amp.


At the moment I'm running it together with a Cambridge soundworks 2.1 system to add a bit of bass and highs since it's pretty mid-only with these speakers.


Anyone got any suggestions? The Celestions are 100W RMS, so would they not work with this amp?
 
Thanks for the clarification.

If I upped the budget, would the Wharfedale Diamond 9.2 or 9.3 be a decent match? Anyone got any opinions? I quite like the idea of a 45cm tall bookshelf speaker (9.3) :p

edit: apparently not available in the UK yet. I've sent them an email though..

Try for some Mission 751s on Ebay, they're not hard to drive, have good mids, clear if slightly sharp treble and produce some reasonable bass. Seen some go for £40 the other day, and they're a bargain for that. They were approx £400 for a pair new!

Most reasonable bookshelf speakers will be able to run on a stereo amp like that; what they'll sound like will depend on the speakers, and the sound of the amp in question (as long as you dont run them on bellwire!)
 
Hmm.. they sound good to me.

I'll have a look for some of those, then try them with my amp and see how it sounds. If it's not too shabby I'll be happy. If it is, I'll be in the market for an amp too :p

Pair them with a few meters of £1-2 per meter cabling from 'slightly more affluent' sounds, and perhaps some banana plugs for ease of cable connections and you should be fairly happy. They're very very nice speakers for acoustics and vocal work due to thier strong mids, however it depends on what you listen to :)
The 751s are about 10-15 years old but they're one of the nicest bookstander speakers mission made. They seem to come round fairly frequently. They're bi wireable too, so just places some cable between the low/hi + and - if you dont intend to bi wire (arguable if it does anything), if they don't come with any connection plates.

Here's a pic so you know what they look like:

I have some I paired with a Cambridge Audio A5, and they sounded good, if lacking the bass of a sub/floorstanders, still clearer than most pc speakers, and it's very clean sounding.

They're only just about to get replaced with a 1.1K Quad Lite and Yamaha AV amp setup, down from 2.2K RRP, and even then Im going to test the quads vs the missions to make sure Im not losing too much sound! (If I am I'll be using the missions for the front of the quad system!)

If you can't find any of these, perhaps look for something like some Mordaunt Short 902i's.
