Wenger & Houllier to get OBE's

I think they should do away with OBEs, MBEs, knighthoods and so on.. they are outdated and go to buddies of the government (like Alex Ferguson, prominent Labour supporter) or people the government think will be a popular choice (eg. with Arsenal and Liverpool supporters in this case).
 
Not entirely sure why they would get them other than Houllier being a foreign manager in a more recent times to win a european trophy for an english club, mabye how he came back form near death to continue as manager.

No idea why Arsene would get it too, suppose they can't give Houllier without giving Arsene.

Other than what I have said I can't think of any other reason why they should get it :eek:
 
Or they are just the two biggest or most high profile Frenchies in England who they could award something to so that they could be seen to be increasing french - british relations after the IRAQ war fiasco.

Why shouldn't they get one? It's only honourary after all (they can't get really one's to their nationality)
Wenger was the first foreign manager to do the double, and the first to win Silverware all in his first full season.
Holluier cause he won a European trophy, and has survived near death.
They deserve it as much as some other people who have them.
 
They do deserve it as much as some other people who have them, I agree.. that's not saying much though ;)

It annoys me slightly that Houllier is made out to be some sort of hero because he survived a heart attack and got back to managing Liverpool afterwards. What about all the thousands of men in this country who have a heart attack every week, where are their OBEs? I bet they didn't get paid wages of £20k+ a week to help alleviate their stress while recouperating.. and they probably had to get back to work in their factory / office soon afterwards. Houllier lay in his private hospital bed knowing he was getting paid loads and could afford to retire afterwards if he wanted!

You sound like my uncle :D who insists that OBE stands for Other B*****'s Efforts....his private comments when someone at his university got an OBE were amusing :D

I can't help feel there are people just as deserving though that will be passed over purely for not being famous.....

And tbh Houllier came back from near death to continue as manager of a top english team it may not be ground breaking but it showes he has some pation and commitment to an English football club, many a person would have gave up and went home after that.

so hows that make him any different from a guy who has a heart attack and goes back to working in a factory does that no show commitment to his job, and his family to go back to work to provide for them ? I doubt if Houllier had left football before his hear attack that he would have had to work again ?

and before you go rolleyes at people why dont you ask about alex ferguson ?

If you actually bothered to you would find out I am of the same opinion of him getting it although I do think it was more worthwhile than Houllier and Wenger. I still however dont think he should have got one.

Oh and just to point out I DONT GIVE THEM OUT but I can have an opinion on who gets them.

In answer to your question, they are football managers, and have done nothing to merit being awarded something such as this, none of them have done anything Heroic, hard working, or endured extreme hardship for the greater good of mankind.
If the likes of Wenger and Houllier can get OBE's for in effect playing Championship manager, i should get one for having to deal with scum all day.
 
Right to be honest why should anyone get an OBE etc then? Both have given joy to millions so I see no reason why some bloke down the road whose helped a couple of thousand people should get one over 2 people who have brought joy to millions.

The other quote bout the pearl of Wisdom, was he was a Liverpool fan, and I'm sure he was one of those people who was harping on about 5 trophys, and after a bad year decides not to support them! The UEFA cup is a very valid trophy, just ask celtic fans.
