...and it has had a revamp. Instead of nice shelves full of car stuff and audio equipment and a couple of bikes it's now 80% bikes and camping gear with a small corner for some basic tools and consumables.

What the hell?

It got me thinking and I guess it's due to most modern cars being too complex for home mechanics to work on. Their traditional market must be shrinking.

halfords has been like this for years. Most folk that work in there don't even know the difference between a spanner and a socket. Get your stuff on the net.

my local store has a separate section upstairs for bikes, the rest of the downstairs is all car stuff. Has the balance about right.

Halfords is great when you realise you dont have the tool you actually need to complete a job, has decent offers on such as the socket sets and 3 for 2 car chemicals but apart from that its a bit of a rip, which just like any mainstream high street shop is, to be expected as the general consumer doesnt know what is or isnt expensive.

Both of my local halfords have about 50/50 car bike sections.. but I too have noticed the bike section encroaching on the car parts recently, not that im bothered though :p

I don't mind Halfords, it's handy because it's a local super store and the trade card makes things very cheap.

It's pretty much the only place to go for off the shelf tools and car bits - short of going to a motor factors (who may not be open) and ever since the motorist centres closed down.

My local store has 50% Bikes, Camping and tent stuff and the other 50% is tools, ice, car parts and consumables.
