Went over my overdraft

Santander does use faster payments I dont care what Wikki etc etc says, I've transferred loads of money in the last 12 months and none have gone via faster payments. Annoying as hell TBH

I dislike looking at my bank statements.

Account 1 (no overdraft) £0.52

Account 2 (interest free student overdraft up to £1000) -£999.31

Yeah, I ain't good with money :(

I had an absolute nightmare with Santander since Christmas with a problem like this. It was an error with Paypal that took my account, which had been dormant, £1 overdrawn. As I didn't use the account much, I never checked it. Until one day I logged in out of chance and saw that charges were pending on my account in January.

£60 fee for being overdrawn. I emailed them and explained that the charge to put the account into the red was a mistake and they replied saying that the fees would be refunded and dropped.

Fast-Forward to March and again, I happen to check my account. £30 charge pending. Utterly confused, I called Santander and the guy said that this charge was for going overdrawn when the £60 fee was applied. So a fee for the fee. He said he wouldn't be able to remove this fee due to the last one, but seeing some common sense and realising that it was their fault, he removed it. He said all fees were now cleared and that there were no problems with the account.

Still annoyed, I decided to close my account. The next Monday, I went into the branch to close it. The cashier then informs me that there is a £21 fee, for the fee, for the fee... Furious, but trying to hold back my temper, I just gave up, paid the fee, and closed the account, happy that I'll never have to deal with them again.

If I don't get any joy from them I will be closing the account.
They have done a similar thing with our business account before.

They've charged me thousands over the years. Thousands. I've clawed about 600 of it back through complaints. I hate them and will be moving.

I haven't gone into my student overdraft because I know it will screw me over when I leave Uni. I just stay at £0.

The student loan meanwhile, I spend every penny of that because I don't have to worry about it.

I'll pay it off before I leave uni ;)

Hopefuly I'll get my DSA grant for next year, which will mean less debt after Uni...

Thats actually awful :S

I've been stung with halifax a few times with charges over the years but to be fair most of the time it was my own damn fault for just being rubbish wiht money back then. Learned the hard way, although I'm very weary about bank transfers due to the whole "fast payments" and instant payments etc all having different clearing times which is just daft. I'm still with halifax and it takes me 7 days for my own ISA money to clear if I want to transfer it to another one of my halifax accounts. So all with the same bank, yet an entire week to clear the money so they can earn interest on it? Yeah right...

Yeah, they'll do that. They'll charge you for something that happened over a month ago, which will take you into the red. Then since you're now in the red you'll get a charge for being overdrawn.

Santander are great for this sort of thing, they will always apply any charges 2-3 days before your wages/regular monthly payments go in, any accounts I hold or have held with other banks take them all on the 1st of the month if any are due.

My wife is paid on the 20th of each month and they always apply any charges on the 18th or before, and I am paid on the last day of the month so they apply any to mine if due a few days before that.

Just seems as though they hope that the charges will put you over and cost you more in excess charges and they have their system set to do it on purpose :)

On the contrary I have gone over my overdraft limit twice with santander and not been charged a penny...

You realise that the FPS depends on both the sending/receiving sort code? Have you checked both are on FPS? For instance, I know my Barclays sortcode is, but my partners isn't.

I have had the exact same problem with Lloyds.

Was actually closing the account anyway and cancelled all payments to that card. But one still tried to charge me, so it was completely their fault.

I got charged £30 for trying to go over (so no money actually was paid out from them). Was furious but had to pay them even if it wasn't my fault so I did just to be able to close my account already, woman in the bank said it was all fine and nothing more would happen. Then a couple of days later I got a letter saying I had to pay £20 because there was a 1 day delay between the £30 and when I paid, so I did and then "everything was now sorted". And then I got another letter saying that I had to pay another £20 as a fee for the delay. So it was £40 for the first day and then would be £20 every day until I paid it off.

So why didn't the people in the bank tell me this when I asked them what I had to do?!

So sneaky. I could accept it if I only went on what was written down in the T&C then fine. But the staff told me lies basically. Shouldn't be allowed.

Asked them to listen back at the phone calls I had with them and talk to the people I met with in the bank. Never heard from them again.. Still get crap in the mail though about how wonderful it would be for me if I rejoined.
