Were to go next? - Asterisk

Hello all,

I am now at the point were i have my new parts coming in 2days and then i'll have my new main pc set up which then leaves me with;

Dell Dimension; Download Box running XP
Laptop; Running Ubuntu

and left over pc that was my old download box; Packard Bell; 450MHz Cpu and 512mb RAM i was thinking what can i do with this and someone mentioned Asterisk were i can then get free internet calls and experiment further with that as it is only a 450mhz i wont run much else will this run Asterisk, can anyone used it before as i dont know much / anything about it.

Get the OReilly Asterisk book, availble free in PDF here:

Alternatively, install the TrixBox distribution which lets you configure it all through web interfaces, but i find it's better to learn it properly once you understand how VOIP and the general technologies work.

I've not used asterisk myself but I have read about it and I think it's an awesome product. It's the sort of app that makes me love FOSS... why spend thousands upon thousands for a PBX when asterisk offers voicemail, conf calls, call distribution, voice-activated menus, etc... for nowt?

I don't have any need for it - it'd be overkill in our household as we hardly ever use the phone as it is - otherwise I'd have already tried it out, for sure.
