I was thinking about getting a Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB and a WD Caviar Black 1TB, are these drives good? Reliable? :)
 
Yes.

The greens are hugely popular in HTPC builds and many home pc's - I currently own 3 x 1TB greens and the 640gb black, never had a problem unlike my other Maxtor / Seagate drives..

Slower transfer speeds and performance overall because they're optimised for quietness and economic power usage - hence why I only use them for storage.

Though, I can't really compare the two because they're used for two totally different things in my comp.
 
Well I was going to use the green for storing music, pics, videos etc and the black as my main OS install drive. Will the performance difference be noticeable if I use them like this?
 
I doubt you'd notice a difference by using it for that kind of thing. That's pretty much exactly what they were designed for.
 
Just my 10c worth.... I now own 8x 1Tb WD Greens (2xWD10EACS & 6xWD10EADS) and I love them. Fast enough for what I use them for, quiet and most importantly they run cool.

That's why there are mirroring/parity RAIDS...
Remember that there are two types of HDDs, those which have already failed and those which are going to fail at some point in the future.
 
How do I go about setting up a RAID array? I assume I need some kind of RAID controller card? Are they easy to set up?

Also, does a RAID array need to be set up before an OS install or can I install an OS on a drive, then later on get a 2nd drive + a RAID controller and set up the RAID array without the need to reinstall?

Sata cables are just sata cables at the end of the day.
So long as it's not a cheap 20p mass produced piece of **** then they'll all work pretty much the same.
 
I assume it need to be a SATA 2 cable not a SATA150 cable though? Or are all those SATA cables on OcUK sata 2 even if it doesn't specifically say sata 2?
