Western Digital RMA Procedure

I have got a Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive (3.5") which I have been using in an enclosure as a backup hard drive (read all my data was on it). However, it has now died and even the Western Digital Diagnostics software won't recognise the drive, even when it's plugged directly into the internal SATA ports.

So, I found the WD RMA Site and set about setting up the RMA and was pleasantly suprised that WD offer an 'advanced' RMA option where they will ship a replacement before receiving the duff one. However, they want to place a hold on my card for $224. How can they justify this? The drive is only worth about £40 ($60-$70) so why would they want to hold $224?

Has anyone had any experience with the standard RMA procedure? How long does it usually take to receive a replacement drive?

The website itself is a bit cack in terms of keeping you uptodate. However the time it takes to get a replacement drive back is usually pretty good.

Is there anything I can regarding data recovery as I had 300GB+ of stuff on this drive which is now gone.

I doubt it. I RMA'd a drive to them last year & they wiped the drive. Fortunately nothing apart from a failed Vista install was on there.
