has anyone RMA'ed a drive to western digital recently
i bought a 1TB Caviar black (WD1002FAEX) only 6 weeks ago and its died

if i return it direct to WD will they send a brand new drive in return or a refurbished one

It wont be new it will be refurbished, if its only 6 weeks old return it back to the shop you bought it they give you 12 month warranty?

i know the retailer is responsible for any returns within the first 12 months but the place i bought it from are playing hardball and keep refusing to give me an RMA number saying its their policy to refer all returns to WD after 28 days

i know the law is on my side and if i fight them ill probably win but i cant really be bothered and just want my replacement asap

It might be new or refurbished, varies.

Go to WD direct. They're not the quickest with RMA's but faster than a retailer, especially one who gives you trouble.

make sure you read there packing instructions as you can void the warranty if sent incorrectly packed

You will get the balance of the warranty on any replacement drive WD send you, plus they ocassionally send you a better drive into the bargain.

They didn't give me a better drive when I RMA'd mine last year, I think it was repaired as Its still got the files & OS that I put on it before it failed.

yep, I checked this on WD's RMA site to see if the warranty had been renewed. It hadn't sadly but you can't win 'em all.

WD allow you to do an advanced RMA too meaning your not without a disk!

Yep, WD's RMA service is absolutly fantastic. I run WD drives in all of my business's servers, and have never had any issues sending back a disk, or any issues with their Refurbished drives.

More often than not, they will send you a better drive (Free upgrade), depending on what their stock is.

Yes you are right - Policy or not, the Sales of Goods Act does clearly states the seller, not the manufacturer, is responsible if goods do not conform to contract...so the law is on your side.

I think in this instance it's probably best to go direct to WD and not shop there again.

Yeah do the Advance RMA, and use the packaging they used to send you the replacement drive, that way you can't go wrong. I've RMA'd a few drives to WD and the service was always top notch. One time I RMA'd a drive and later found out it was a motherboard fault before I sent the drive back, but the new drive had already came. It was a 250gb drive and even back 2 years ago it said I'd be charged £39 for the drive if I didn't send the faulty one back within 28 days. At the time it was easily as good as OCUK's price on the drive so I decided just to keep it and let them charge my card for it. Turns out my car ran out that month, and they never actually charged me for it. Oh well :D

I'm assuming you'd rather return it to the seller, as you think they'd just replace it with new, rather than possibly just having it refurb'd if you RMA through WD?

I would imagine that if the seller is that stubborn, then once you RMA the drive to them, they'll just act as a middle man and RMA the drive to WD, before returning it to you.

So best to just go to WD direct - their RMA service was very good when I recently returned a drive. In my case the I think they repaired the drive.
