I know other manufacturers have a util that will allow you to decide between speed and noise. Do WD doe one similar? Had a gander at their download page and it doesn't mention anything.

Just got a WD5000AAKS, copying everything across to it at the mo.

Cheers

Found the IBM/Hitachi Feature Tool (here) allows you to change automatic acoustic management level on most make HDs including WD. With it set to off equals fastest performance.

Other than that nothing much more you can do apart from making sure running in SATAII (i.e. remove/insert necessary jumpers) ;)

Ah cheers, didn't realise you could use that.

For your information.........
there are no jumpers on SATA drives(400, 500Gb and up(WD)).

The WD500AAKS are very fast drives,,i don't think you be able to set it to a faster speed then they come at...

What he said wasn't that you can increase the theoretical performance... but that it comes with acoustic software hampering the overall performance, and this can be changed also via software so that the drive works faster. Geddit?

Harddrives run at there fastest with the acoustic management turned off.

I been thinking of selling my 150GB raptor and replacing it with one these WD 500GB drives,(as am always down to less then 10GB of free space on the raptor) .

Hmm why is my minimum write so much lower... reckon thats due to the controlle ron my P965 mobo?
I didn't notice your minimum write speed was lower.....strange ..

Wonder if it anything to do with i tested with HDtune 2.54..and your using HDtune 2.55 ??

Am going run a test with HDtune 2.55 in a minute..
