Western Digital WDG1C3200 MyBook Premium 320GB Firewire 400 / USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (HD-090-WD)

Looking to buy one for my brothers birthday any help would be great

I don't have that one, I have it's bigger brother the 400GB Firewire 400/800 USB 2 version, which arrived today. You have to format it first which takes a long time. It comes ready formatted as FAT32 and I had to change it to NTFS.

Backing up from another drive was a doddle and it ran pretty silently. The software that WD provide is very simple as well and allows you to create schedules and incremental backups e.g. in my case, each week.

I've been looking for a back up solution for a while and it's a good little purchase in my opinion.

Overall, it sits on my desk, looks very neat and the status indicator is LED blue and rotates round in a circle. I ideally like everything to run from my computer, and I'm annoyed that the drive has taken up another plug socket but I guess that's down to preference really.

Just out of curiosity may I ask the reason behind your username? It's the name of Lance Armstrong's charity...

thats true I am a big fan of Lance Armstrong watched the tour last year final stage paris amazing

As for the username a family member passed away due to cancer, so I took this name my family and I try to Livestrong.

Plus we have donated money to the LAF which is a great charity

ive had my 320GB Premium for around a week now and i think its a great little device

i can plug my ipod into the 2nd FW port in the back and it shows up in windows and and works fine even if the unit is turned off

its nice as fast as well for an external

when i use USB2 it averages at around 29MB/sec

i looked at the my book at a local dealer, they also had the lacie d2, if i hadnt seen the lacie i would have gone for the mybook, however when there side by side you can see the build quality difference, i know they might be a little more expensive and looks arnt everything, but my data is pricless to me so id rather go for the relyable. thats not knocking the wd but looks and feels too plasticicy and cheep
