can some one help me ive not got the foggiest what sata raid does or sataI or sataII or sata III is all about but if it will help my boot times etc and improve read and write speeds

id be very interested in your advice

The WD5000aads is a bit quicker at moving big files around (90MB/s vs. 70MB/s) but it is a bit worse at moving lots of small files around (16ms random access vs. 14ms random access) due to the lower drive RPM.

You can get the Seagate 7200.12 500GB (ST500DM002) for around £50 - 60, or a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB (WD5000AAKX) for £55 - £60. Both of these will definitely be quicker than the drive you have now.

Let us know how you get on.

thats fair enough the only reason i have the western digital green is cause it cheaper to by a virgin tivo box for £15 and remove the hdd than buy a used one on the bay or elsewere.

i also have a seagate pipeline hd 2 again removed from a sky + hd box £10 if thatsaa any better?

The Seagate Pipeline HD 2 has super bad random access times (18.5ms) which makes it rubbish for lots of small files, but it's fine for big files (like... Sky+ Recordings! ;) )
The Pipeline HD 2 range of drives are among the quietest hard drives on the market, which is why they are good for set top boxes.

Out of the two, the WD5000AADS is the better option.
