Never been there, going this weekend to see the Weston Air Festival (and to start exploring the country we live in for once). Any good places to eat? Drink? What's the night life like? It's not a dive is it?

Dunno what I hope to achieve with this thread really, maybe some of you can tell me it's great or crap :D

I wouldn't call it nice but it's certainly better than some other old sea side towns. I've been to Paignton and Great Yarmouth, both feel like a chav apocalypse.

Last time I went was in 1979

It was fine

That's the problem, it hasn't changed since 1979 :D

Amusement arcades / B+Bs' / Expensive Fish and Chip shops all along the 'Front'

Crappy shops a bit further in and that's about it, apart from the traffic nightmares on busy weekends.

Just go there with no expectations IMO... I've not been there but chivvy places can be fun occasionally - I went to Skegness once and the train journey up there was like the bar out of Star Wars.

Accommodation was basic but clean (holiday apartments rented direct from the owner) and a short walk to the beach. The bars were full of chavs and just off the beach was a massive wind farm. I was still fun though, beach wasn't too crowded, was really nice weather all weekend... whole thing was dirt cheap.

You just described every coastal town in the south of the uk.

I went there to Butlins as a teentage degenerative drug taking grunge douche.

(It was awesome)

Sounds like a charming place then. I'll book some other stuff too, never been to Cheddar Gorge either.
