Wetherspoons - burger, chips & beer

Spoons Burgers are excellent for the money, certainly better then McDonald's. I find their ale is a bit hit and miss, so I often play it safe a opt for the Guinness.

I will concede that you can get much better food, but not at the same price point. Much as I'd love to, I can't fork out £15 when I don't want to cook.

It's just a generic burger and chips served in a generic chain pub along with a pint, for five quid. If it's hot and tastes like a burger then I don't see what there is to complain about. I had 2 weeks of fantastic locally farmed and home cooked meals in Cyprus this year, but you know what? I still enjoyed the Burger King I tucked into at Larnaca airport.

If you want a premium burger then go get some meat and make your own or try somewhere like the Handmade Burger Co. You will have to pay substantially more for it though.

I'm just saying they use frozen meals which they microwave on the premises. This is actually what happens there as my sister is a training manager at the branch. To me it tastes horrible.

Not tried their burgers so i cant comment, but i doubt they will be any better for you than a big mac.
I suspect you will find that almost all pubs that are a part of a chain have pre-cooked then microwaved food. That's how they keep the cost down. If you want top of the range food, you pay top of the range prices. They're actually pretty good for the price.

Whether they're any better for you I don't know, but they are leagues ahead of McDonalds burgers in taste, texture and value for money (i.e. how much food you actually get).

I don't mind Wetherspoons myself. Only complaint I have is the wait on a Sunday if I have lunch there. If you really want a bad pub meal in comparison go to a Hungry Horse, the plate tastes better.

Spoons is very good for what it is. The pints are always good 95% of the time and when they are bad, you have no problem getting another drink of them. The food is far superior to anything mcd9onalds turn out or other fast food places. at least they use real bacon and cheese..

+1 :)

Hmm. I ate at a Wetherspoons most nights for a couple of months one time.

The best things on the menu are: Steaks / Burgers/ Curries. Everything else is obviously just frozen/fried.

The burger deal is really good value especially compared to McDs. The currys are good value as well, and pretty tasty. Yes you probably could make better yourself using the finest ingredients, but for honest pub food, it's really not bad.

Spoons Beer and burger owns tbh.. nice and cheap and hits the spot :p

once ordered one in Victoria train station though, and I got a few crisps instead of chips, not happy!

I've been to over 1000 pubs this year (probably 200+ of those were spoons) and IMO Wetherspoons is consistantly acceptable, and offer beter service and quality (for the price) than most other big chain pubs.

There will always be little gems of independant pubs with great home cooked meals but there are an awful lot more that are grotty little dives with either sub par food or an overpriced pretencious menu.

The 'Spoons closest to me make a point of stating what temperature their beers are at (via a digital readout on the wall behind the bar), and I've never, not once, had a warm pint off them.

For what they are they're brilliant. They know their market and are the best at doing what they do. Cheap beer and cheap food good enough to rival or better anything else on the high street.

The food at spoons is generally pretty poor, the burgers aren't even up to fast food standard.

Pretty much everything server is re-heated/microwaved. On the rare occasion you choose something that's actually cooked there though, it's usually alright (usually decent steak and chips for the price :))

Such a good hang over meal in the evening when you REALLY can't be bothered to cook.

But no i do not know the name of the relish.

EDIT - The Spoons in Falmouth is EXCEPTIONALLY good. Very very nice in there imo.

You'll find the same at fast food places though  If it's not microwaved it's deep fried.

It's surprising to hear some of the bad reports about Weatherspoons on here, initially I thought it was just a bit of OcUK snobbery, I tend to go into Weatherspoons a lot, mainly because it's cheap, and of the pfft 15 or so I've been in (all over the UK) I've NEVER had a cold beer served or any food that'd I'd class as "terrible". The interiors are always a bit , well, carp, and it tends to attract the "wrong type" but other than that it's smashing IMHO.

Personal choice but I always try and stay away from pre-cooked, microwaved food.

AT least McDonalds actually do cook the burgers on site.
