Correct. Its why they overclock well. AMD reference PCB is good and has meaty vrms.

+1, AMD reference PCB's are better than half the AIB's... they are solid.

Other than the DirectCUII are there any custom PCBs?

Also I have 2 reference Sapphire cards and they don't OC well. Not sure exactly what you mean by 'solid'.
