I have a 240gb ssd for my main drive, but will need to get a 2nd drive for storing games on. I already have 3tb of NAS space which my personal files, photos and media is stored on.

Im looking for 2Tb. Ssd in that range too expensive. Will a standard 7200 blue drive be satisfactory, or should i go red (WD or toshiba?) or WD black? The reds are 5400 rpm not 7200 unless i pay a bit more.

Was hoping for sub £100 but the black drives are more than this in 2Tb.

I was in a similar position with a 500GB SSD and a 12TB NAS.

My main storage hogs were VMs. I initially installed an old (2008) WD 500GB HDD which I used for my most used VMs and more recently for my growing Steam library. I still needed to store VMs on the NAS.

The HDD was woefully slow and I thought of upgrading the SSD to 1TB but would still have to juggle VMs between disks and a growing Steam library would have to be split.

In the end I opted to keep the 512GB SSD and upgraded the HDD to a 6TB WD Black.

Although 6TB is more than I need at the moment this drive has better performance than the smaller capacity Blacks.

I can now run all my VMs and Steam games from the 6TB drive and am very happy with the performance. I have now moved documents from the SSD onto the HDD and keep all photos and videos on the NAS along with all my backups.

Regarding the reds, blues and blacks. The reds are targetted at continuously running NAS drives and sacrifice performance for reliability. I have 6x3TB 5400 WD Reds in my Freenas box. The blues and blacks are both targetted at desktop applications but the blacks have much better performance.

In your situation I would definately not fit a red. Fit a black if your budget will stretch to it otherwise fit a blue. Black would be my recommendation.
