What 4870 card?

Hi all,

Just to update, I ended up getting the Sapphire 4870 Toxic with 1gb of memory. Just installed it into my rather basic Asrock DualSata II motherboard with its 4X PCI-E slot.

It's working well enough, using basic drivers from disc, 9.1, though idle temp is at 62*c with fan on auto (running 6%).

This has at least confirmed my gaming problem with the Rome level of C&C3 is not due to my Graphics cards (as I still get stutering at a certain part of that level.

My Hyper 580 modular PSU seems fine, the PSU had two spare 12v outputs unconnected, and I had a single 6pin PCI-E, the card came with two single molex-6pin adapters so I added one of those to a single 12v molex connection.

PS What are the three little green Led lights on top for?

Yeah I plan to get a new motherboard, probably a Biostar I was going to get one last week with the GPU but other things arose, I have a rolling series of upgrades and bits to get. Tempted to sell a couple of bike parts and go i7, but the grown up side of my brain says get a grip LOL :D

Going to get the Sapphire one myself now, just been reading some reviews on the product page, and one had me absolutely howling, someone said in Crysis at very high settings they saw 100fps pmsl :D :D :D :D

More like -100, as you wouldn't even see 100 at 640x480 everything on low or off, even on a 295. :D :D

what 4780

always thought that the msi 7900gto/gtx had the best cooling power of any card i have ever had,but since owning a 4870 512 toxic, its in a class of its own by far, this thing idles 26-32,never ever seen it above 42 on load & thats playing grid which is a pretty graphical intense game, and pretty quiet to,gpu at 800/1055,ccc maxed out at 820/1120,always good to run lower than max,you wont be dissapointed as you now have a chioce of 1gig versions to

I've ordered one of these which should arrive tomorrow with plans to get a further one in a month or two (any chance of a buy one get one free ocuk? No? Guess not :(). I'll let you know quite how good it is...
I have the XFX, its extremely loud with the stock cooler if you want great temps, if you leave it on auto fan settings it gets to hot for me, I like mine to stay around the 70c under load, but if you use auto fan it can go to the 80c +. I set the fan to 30% which isnt to noisy and keeps the card around the 40c idle, just takes a little tweaking, but I would suggest an after market cooler if you want some silent nights :P

seriously asap get a new motherboard and psu.
x4 pci-e is restricting your new card bigtime and the Hyper psu's (from reading on here) are worse than starting your pc in a bath full of water :D

as for the lights they are just diagnostic lights to inform you if there is a problem. all three are lit then no problem.
