What 850w? Phantek, Seasonic or something else?

There is very little difference in prices between seasonic equivalent to the OEMs

phanteks Pro 850 - £125
Seasonic focus GX850 - £103 (just found a retailer with this stock!) but usually £130

phanteks pro 1000 - £160
Seasonic focus gx-1000 - £160

phanteks x 1000 - £220
Seasonic Prime PX 1000 - £230

it’s the same story with the ASUS Thor PSUs.

so really there is nothing difference in cost. It just come down to availability.

if you ask why they do it, then why not. More branding is good for business. People buying Phanteks cases might want all phanteks stuff to go with their “phanteks build”. All I care is that the goods inside are decent and it is affordable and available in the current climate.

Yep thats a no brainer right away. I thought the 1000w Seasonic gold I originally ordered for £149 was a great price. Then the phanteks which was available at £125 albeit a 850w was also a good price considering (most units are now OOS, overpriced or on pre-order). All decent brand/quality is above £100 anyway, Im not chancing a so-so make for £89 etc. as that will only end badly I think and not worth it if your components are expensive enough to cheap out on the PSU.
 
Seasonic/Corsair RMx and above units for me. Enough said.

I am sure other brands have solid PSU as well. But I cba with the extensive research into which product line is poo and scour the net for reviewed and tests.

my original plan was to get RMi to have Corsair software to monitor my power and ability to switch to Multi Rail. But no RMi with reasonable prices exist atm. Or in fact in stock. So went for phanteks pro instead as it was the only thing in stock that is solid and reasonably priced. Plus the phanteks was the original plan before the original plan :)
 
I've recently bought a Corsair RM850X and am utterly happy with it.

The model has just been refreshed this week, so there's now the 2018 and 2021 model to choose between. 2021 is more expensive though.
