Me and my friend were having a look around our local camera shop the other day, we had a good look over a D3 as my friend is seriously considering making the upgrade to one from a D2X, mainly to be used in conjunction with 800mm and 500mm lenses for wildlife - fair play...
Whilst I was busy drooling over a 600 F4, we noticed someone else was having a play with the demo D3. I was passivley listening when I heard the salesman ask the bloke what sort of photography he intended to use the D3 for....

.... wait for it ....

"I'm going to be using it to photograph buses and coaches"

..:( sure... its a free country and he can go and photograph whatever he likes, but for gods sake, £3k+ on a body, all that cutting edge technology, low noise, 35mm sensor, AF which works.. All for a nice shot of Lincoln Roadcar's finest chariots....

Maybe i'm wrong... maybe drag racing, birds of prey, mammals and all the other stuff I like is totally boring, and buses are the new thing, I think we're all missing out. :(

Drop what you're doing, cancel that trip to timbuktu, to hell with snowy owls... this is where its at: http://nbe.fpic.co.uk/

lmfao - i was in a sop with a professional shooter moving to digital saying he doesnt worry too much about DOF as can be done in processing.

I'm no proffesional by no means what so ever but processing dof is never going to be as good as the real thing.

If im wrong tell me so!

well, you can artificially blur stuff in photoshop if its sharp. its not the same but in a pinch it would do.
other way round though? nah.

"I'm going to be using it to photograph buses and coaches"

didn't you hear? this is the code-phrase you use when you intend to be taking pictures of naked women a great distance away. without their knowledge. or permission.

;) :p

Wouldn't put it past him, he'd need an 800mm 5.6 with a 1.4x on the front, as i'm the stench of Salmon paste sandwiches would keep most women on the top floor :D

Its really bleak tbh, in Lincoln we have a very popular Christmas market each year and it brings thousands of coaches to the city centre full of people from all over the world (yes the world). There was a thing in the paper a while back about the "Bus Enthusiasts" (mentalists) who were out in force getting their fix of national express action.

I mean, train spotting isn't exactly what i'd call a "cool" thing to do, but some of the old stream trains and fancy electric trains can make an interesting subject to photograph, I can totally accept that, but buses... i'm sorry.... no one will ever convince me that its worth buying a D3 and quality glass for... no one.. :(

i wouldn't be so quick to diss him. maybe he's single handedly covering the entire niche market and making a good living out of it.

Well at least he won't be the only photographer in the world with equipment that totally outstretches both his talent and needs.

Whilst I can understand some seeing that as a "waste", surely a fantastic photo can be made out of any subject. He might have some really wonderful techniques to photo his subjects. However, a limitation indeed on what it could be used for in that its very specific.
But then, where do you draw the line? I find taking pictures of cars and bikes very inspiring, but to some that would be equally as boring. In all honesty, taking pics of some of the more popular photographed subjects such as mammals I would find boring up to a point.

Don't be so narrow minded :)
Theres nothing wrong with transport photography at all! This is one of my best pics, taken with 400D & stock lens (Have the full res version about, but its huge!)-

(Excuse the very lack of updates on the fotopic site for a very long time now :p )

Don't complain- At least he actually wants to do something with the camera.

To be honest; I'd probably find buses and coaches more interesting than wildlife, I find individuality and (healthy) obsessions with things most people find boring inspiring. Martin Parr anyone?

My 2 cents.

Oh gawd, what have I started

If you want to make something look quite arty and maybe take a different approach to something most people find boring to make it look interesting then I agree its highly worthwhile, although I'd think that 99% of the population would be more interested in a photograph of a golden eagle than a stock photo of a bus or a national express coach.

<digs even bigger grave for ones self>

The main gripe I have is that this guy bought a D3 for bus enthusiast photography, 99% of bus enthusiast photography is like train spotting, its just snapping a picture of a bus for recording purposes, it doesn't exactly warrant a D3..

I could accept some really nice stylised pictures of buses, but "bus enthusiasts" don't go in for stuff like that, the pictures are all about the bus/coach in its natural habitat................ :p

Maybe he doesn't need the camera at all, and it is above his actual needs and has more advanced features than he will ever use - I suspect we are all guilty of that to some point or another- but then on the other hand, it may well not be. He may be using the images for trade publications, books or who knows? What I can't understand is why does it matter? as long as he is happy to spend that amount of money, and he likes the camera, and gets enjoyment out of it, then who are we to comment and pass judgment.

I think it would make a nice change to see some bus pictures or anything new now I come to think of it! How many times can we see the same old images posted over and over - I for one really do not wan't to see another macro flower shot as long as I live - and if it takes the good old bus to break that repetition then shoot away!

I'll take that challenge then....
