What about buying quadro midrange gpu rather than a gtx1080?

I play games and cad. Gtx handle cad reasonably well.

But how does quadro handle games?
Should I get a mid range quadro for £500?

Simple answer is no. The drivers will be completely different so will impact gaming performance

For 1080 money you are looking at the p5000 with less than half the cuda cores and 3GB less memory. Doesn't seem like a good idea.
