There is no point proposing if you haven't got the funds to go through with it, that'll only cause tension especially if she wants a large wedding.

Also bare in mind that 23 is rather young, there is no harm at all in waiting 5 years. You lose nothing but could benefit greatly! Personally I think everyone should live together for a couple of years before considering marriage, it's quite a step legally..

I proposed at 32, married at 34.

I dont mean get married, I would intend on being engaged for a good few years before actually marrying.

I'm 22, GF is also 22, been doing out for almost 3 years now and there's no way in hell I'd propose this soon :|. Madness!

Why get engaged for a few years? Pointless.

Why on earth is it pointless, showing your partner you want to be with them for the rest of your life and unfortunately marriages are expensive. I know plenty of people that were engaged years before they got married. An engagement is a statement of intent, I see no difference in being engaged 2 days than to being engaged 10 years.

Each to there own i guess

Look, I'm going to be the pantomime villain in order to make a point.

Your GF was 18 years old when you first started going out; you were 20. Even at the grand old age of 23 most people don't really know who they are, what they want, where they want to be or how the whole life thing works. They're not stupid, they just don't generally have the life experience to make informed life decisions. Hopefully you've thought this through because that will be your life for the next 50 or 60 years.

e : wait, I didn't answer the question. I was 33.

Cheers for the input. I never said I was going to propose though, it's just starting to feel right. Also I dont want this thread to be about me, i was just curious what ages people were when they got engaged.
