What am i "missing" about ipods?

I like using the built-in iPod feature on my iPhone as I only have to carry one device, it was a big factor for me as I have enough crap in my pockets.

You like using the built in mp3 player on your mobile phone?

Cracking idea! :D

I find the iPod UI to be the easiest and best I've used, especially when you've got A LOT of music.

I've got an 80GB classic, I threw the earphones away as soon as I got it.

iPod earphones are the most uncomfortable earphones I've ever used, they just don't fit in my ears properly, I have to use "In ear" ones really.

Specs wise though, iPods aren't that bad, for me, 80GB and silly battery life, it was the best one I could get for £150 at the time. I've had it for about 2 years now and it's going strong.

Itunes CAN be a pain, but if you turn off "Auto syncing" and turn on "manage my music manually" then it's fine. I just drag and drop my music into itunes and it copies it over straight away.

I've also got a 16GB iPhone, but I'm waiting until 64GB+ iPod touches come out, as I think the iPhone is a better music player than the classic, but the storage capacity lets it down, that, and I don't want to burn through my battery.

Well I own a ipod touch, and I got it for a variety of reasons but mainly as I thought the screen was very good, and I love adding extra apps (and designing my own). Can you show me a mp3 player that has such a variety of apps available? Also one click access to getting new songs is great!

i guess people love apples.. as i have never seen a point in buying any of them.. the price is not even competitive.. always overprices, lack of features etc etc.. good build quality? sorry but a samsung player for 100quid is the same if not better.. costs less.. has more features etc etc.. so yeah if you want to stick with the crowd you buy apple if you want best bang for buck you buy other manufacturers..

For their normal MP3 players I would agree, but there really isn't much on the market that offers the same as the touch at the moment.

I don't see how the software is rubbish? You point it to a directory, it puts all your music accross... simple as anything and works perfectly.

How is it hard to use? Don't honestly get that at all, you flick through tracks just as you do on any MP3 player?

Zune 120 user here too.

I can't import a M3u playlist to have it on the Zune. (The following might not be fair, but it still annoys me) Doesn't handle playlists how I would want it to - can't have playlist and drill down to artist, album. Adding Classical music is just a mess of artists, so want it in a separate playlist. The software is as bloaty as itunes.

Having to middle click to select artist, album etc is terrible. I miss it and go sideways often. Getting your passenger to do it who is not familiar with it is next to impossible.

If you gone back one too many times, you then press back again until the track is on now playing. If you press back again now it will go back to the starting menu where you select music etc.

No simple way to get random on and off.

The device has no idea how much battery life you have. Seems to go from 3/4 to empty instantly.

Rubbish lossless support, and it seems to crash if a track size is over a certain size. Not good when a lot of tracks I listen to are over 10 minutes long.

As said, the only redeeming feature is the DAC is very good.

I used to have an iPod. It was great until I charged it and then it wouldn't start up at all. The same thing happen to my brother's as well about a week later.

I don't like iTunes either, found it really annoying to use.

I much prefer my Creative Zen. It hadn't been used for a year and it still worked when I charged it up. I also find it much easier to use and I like the fact it's chunkier than an iPod as it means I'm less likely to lose it!

No other MP3 player offers better in car integration

This is the only reason I have an iPod.
The only time my iPod leaves my car is when I'm adding/removing music using yamipod (I don't use iTunes).

I have a Zune for music on the move.

What do you mean? It's identical to an iPod Touch.

Unless you was getting at battery usage, I don't really need to worry as if I'm on travels I'll have my netbook with me which I can charge it off anyway.

I've found that with 3G off (I rarely require the speed of 3G) that my battery lasts quite long even with a lot of iPod usage.

Actually i was getting at the fact that your mobile phone doubles as an mp3 player, rendering the need for another mp3 player kind of silly.

Oh right.

Well, all my previous phones have had tacked on MP3 players where as the iPhone has a fully featured iPod in it. That's why I didn't get another device, with my old phone I used to carry a separate Walkman because the phone MP3 player was pretty damn pants with a poor interface.

I used to have a 60gb iPod video, then got a 80GB iPod Video, then got a 8GB iPod Nano 3rd Gen.

The nano is such a great device, take it everywhere.

Reason? Size, ease of use and battery life.

Dont think there are any other mp3 players that small and sleek, and easy to use.

I did buy some cx300 earphones, as the apple ones do suck :p

Well why not a Sony player? Same size and better battery life as well as better UI and drag and drop or sync with multiple programs if you want. The sony players are also regarded as some of the best on the market for SQ and UI and the X series is widely regarded as better than the touch..

Mine is an 8gb Nano, older square shape which plays movies, with some ex top-end Sony ear plugs. It's pretty, it's easy to use, it doesn't do lots of other stuff I'll never use and, most importantly, it completely blocks the scum general public out from my commute :D

I guess if I had a phone that had this functionality integrated then I might go that route, but a whole contract for an iPhone rolls in at about £720 and I can't justify that sort of money. Other mp3 players I've tried just aren't as easy to use and the interface isn't as nice. I'm no iTunes fanboy but you can't argue against it for the way it handles music on and off the iPod. I use WMP to play music, CDburnerXP to encode, mp3tag to tag it and iTunes to manage the iPod.

Why do you need an iPhone? There are plemty of other (better) phones on the market that do the same thing and more, plus their contracts are better (even when the phones themselves can be more expensive)

this is exactly it

I can't tell you how many people coming in asking for an ipod when they mean mp3 player.

It's similar to Tomtom, people refer to satnavs as Tomtoms, and many believe that's the name of the technology. because these companies have done such a fantastic marketing job and have become so popular, there's very little else they need do at the moment, sales are guaranteed

Most people who buy an iPod do it because it is popular and well known, go and get the iPod, no need to research what is the best player as you know it's ok. don't care about anything but looks and want to fit in.

What I love about the whole drag and drop difficulty argument is when people just move files from and to their memory stick they all find it so easy yet stick a drag and drop mp3 player into the mix and suddenly it's difficult!? People also seem to forget that drag and drop players can also be syncronised like iPods.

So in conclusion marketing and original popularity as well as looks, not the actual quality of the player that make the massive market share that iPods enjoy. Obviously iPods would always sell but if Apple didn't have the marketing strategy they have the proportion sold would be much less.

To the OP why not get her another mp3 player? I have a Touch HD and use that day to day as a music player but it's always good to have a seperate for those longer journeys/holidays. Have a research into others, I recommend a sony as the headphones that come with them are pretty good too (so no need to buy another pair tbh.

You can sub define into Playlists / Genres / Favorite Items / Play Counts / Search the libary / Groupings etc etc, quite a few options to narrow down the long list effect, then you have the Genius which picks similar tracks to the one you have on iirc.

You can do that with WMP as well as Winamp (I think).

Not really, but i can see why some people prefer to navigate that way.

And this, which is the way I listen to most of my music. WMP also loads up damn faster doesn't jam up like iTunes seems to all the time when I use it.

Also some of the Sony players have something called "senseme" which analyses the songs as they are put on the player and catagorises them according to the style of the song (Electric, Classic, Upbeat, Heavy etc.). I can't live without it and it really works, very few songs I think that are in the wrong sections. You also get the usual browse song, artist, album, playlists, auto playlists as well.

Advertising, a lot of people not in the 'know' seem to believe they are the only mp3 player about infact they believe an ipod is the right name for an mp3 player.
