What am I missing, why do you need an AV Amp?

Upscaling is worth it, I've watched low resolution movies on my 1080p screen, PC as source. With no upscaling it looks terrible, with it enabled it almost looks HD. ie with cartoons it'll remove mpeg blocking, and smoothen edge lines. Our Oppo 981 can scale DVD's to 1080p.

As for input/output switching you could buy IR controlled switching box, have learning remote so it'll change input on the box automatically. Basically like a av amp but without amp stages inside.

So for the 37" Panasonic Vierra I'm looking to get, should I be concerned about just pluggin in Sky and the video recorder straight into it? Would they ideally need to up upscaled by something?

As regards a DVD player, one way or another I will get a new one (HDMI & upscaling), but it HAS TO BE ABLE to play DivX and XVid stuff like my current old Philips DVP 630 :)

Sorry to hijack, what AV amps do people recomend on a budget? :D

When asking for a surround sound option I was recommend:-
"A denon-1507 av receiver £200, and Tannoy EFX5.1 Speakers £180"

I would look for a previous gen second hand model, you'll be able to buy a model from a few models up (higher output power) for the same price as a new amp. My first av amp was a Yamaha, it was ok.

Sorry I think i missed the whole point here, I don't really need it for surround sound yet, I will need it as a signal boost for my picture. (I think, bit new to this sort of set up :))

Sounds very off topic then... Start a new thread and state exactly what your prob is :)
