Hi,

My HTPC seems a bit sluggish and looking into getting a new CPU. The motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H AMD 690G Socket AM2.

Looking at Gigabytes site it does support AM2+ and AM3:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_Model.aspx?ProductID=2579#anchor_os

Currently I have the:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (2.1GHz) Socket AM2 Energy Efficient L2 1MB (2x512KB) Cache Retail Boxed Processor

I don't want to spend loads so what is a decent low powered CPU I should go for ? Open to most suggestions, just want to get it all ready for my Windows 7 reinstall :) :D

Thanks how much faster will this be compared to my Brisbane 4000+ ? As technically only 900mhz quicker.

g'ah just checked and according to the gigabyte link, the athlon 2 250 isn't supported :(

You can only compare raw clock rates with chips that use the same core. A Core i7 920 runs at a much lower clock speed than a 3.8GHz Pentium 4 but it still absolutely destroys it. :)

Because it uses current generation technology, hence the 'II'. It has twice the L2 cache and it uses smaller manufacturing.

With that motherboard though there's not much you can do on a budget. All the Athlon Is are not going to yield enough of a difference, and the Phenom IIs start at like £100, not counting the 550. But i'm not sure if that's completely up to date. It doesn't necessary have to be on that list for it to work, there are ways of checking.
