Essential?

All updates and patches, Firefox, open office, Spybot, AVG/Avast/F-Secure, Siteadvisor and thats it!

Nothing else is essential tbh

PC-Cillin Internet Security, Mozilla, MSN 8+, Filezilla/CuteFTP, VLC Media Player, WinRAR, Ad-aware, Spybot, A2, Registry Mechanic, MagicISO or Alcohol or Nero, CCleaner, Advanced Spyware Remover, Office 2003

Some of those I don't install right away, but I always end up installing them. I also have a few more on the list.
 
The only thing that's not been mentioned and is on my list is Putty (unfortunately my PC's now used for work more than play :()

i thought about writing my list of essential software but don't have the typing skills required :D

would take me too long. when i reinstall windows (if for some reason i can't use a backup - like when i get a new hdd) the list of software i need is endless. it is ALL essential.
