Its probably from some latin "to watch - pay note(attention to) to show your respect.

No. I'm considering the meaning of the phrase 'regards' used in the context signing off an email.

i always jus thought regards was just a word to say good thhings with out putting like whole sentences like :

i was talking to boss other day about a family friend whom worked in same company but left a whle back due to illness anyway my boss said give him my regards which in this case regards meaning (hi,hope your okay hope you get better type of thing)

whereas if it was just to some one like a work aquintance could be taken as my respect . so depends on the contexts of discussion or email.

I used to sign off emails with 'Regards' until I pondered what it actually meant.

Now I sign off:

Sexily yours,
Craig

Wishes - think "all the best", "hope things go well for you", etc. -or- even "God be with you" (Goodbye).

The ones I love best are:
"Hi, how are you?" - just try responding with a medical report or explaining that you feel a bit stiff down the left-hand side or how you haven't slept well for a few nights :D
and
"Good morning" - is that an enquiry or a command?

Dictionary.com seems to indicate that the origin is from "guard" as in protect.
Perhaps it was originally a form of allegiance, so "my regards" was "my protection".

If you do something with regard for someone or something, it means you are doing something whilst keeping that thing in mind. When you say 'kind regards', you are effectively saying 'kind thoughts'.

"Betty drew up a plan of action to expunge the local chavs, with no regard to their pleas for leniancy."

The phrases "With Regards," and "With Best Regards," are used as general closings in all kinds of business letters to express good wishes or best wishes, even if the letter is a complaint.

The word "regards" came from the word "regard" which means, respect, affection, esteem. In business, though, "regards" never means affection. "Affectionately Yours," is commonly used to express affection.
