What are the downsides of going with Z690 as opposed to Z790 motherboard with 13700k.?

I went low mid range 790 rather than high mid range 690 because I need 64gb ram minimum. I'm thinking that when faster 2 x 48gb kits become available then the newer chipset might get more support.

And I think I replied to you as to why I wouldn’t take Intels socket over AMD’s AM5. IMO only a cultist would go Intel right now.
Compatibility is better with intel, iv learnt the hard way when i went to am4 from my intel setup. Virtualisation of some operating systems just doesnt work with amd cpus.
Once its time to upgrade for me im going back to intel regardless if performance is worse than what amd has on offer at the time.

Give an example. I've had no issues running VMs on my 3600. And the experience has been the same with VMs when I moved to a laptop that has an i7 11800h

Brand cultist for suggesting to stay with a platform that will enable future CPU upgrades vs your offering which fails in this regard? Quite an obnoxious way to discuss a difference of an opinion.

Z10m has shown and stated he upgrades his CPU often which your suggestion doesn't offer the ability to do so. There was no need to be rude.

You've made the right choice Z10m, I hope you enjoy your new hardware when you make your decision.
Motherboard upgradability makes sense if it's free. Wiith AMD, it's not, it never was. Had a b350 mobo that I wanted to put a new CPU into. But I couldn't, it took 600 days from the release of zen 3 for amd to give support to older motherboards. 600 days!!! Not only that, but when they finally gave support for it, the 5800x 3d I was looking at was more expensive than just buying a 12700 WITH a new motherboard. So what good is mobo upgradability if I get to pay the same money for an inferior CPU and an outdated motherboard? Doesn't make sense to me.

that support for older am4 platforms has been discussed many times and it was down to technical issues with bios size limitations, and even when the support came it was at a compromise by removing support for certain other cpu models. cant really blame amd for that, those that had motherboards with 32mb bios were good to go.
