I can't find any source saying this has happened yet, Sony have locked down the AV hardware from linux somewhat which may limit the quest.. everyone is keen to exploit linux on the PS3, but nothing useful has materialised (Except Folding@home)..

You can, YDL will hook up to networked PC's no problem and you can play it on VLC Media player

o-m-g. Have a think what the main use for a GAMEs console is. To play games, not to extend your PC. If you wanna watch all your pr0n watch it on your pc. jeez.

the main use, yes. But when you're paying £500 you're probably going to want to use some of the other functionality available.

I'd rather be able to watch downloaded TV series from the sofa than at a desk.

I have a 26" Samsung R74 which my PS3 will be connected to via HDMI, I don't have this available for the PC as it's across the room...plus I want to use the PS3 for interweb and computurised tasks when I cba with turning my PC on.

Makes a nice all in one box :)

people are still struggling to get VLC/Mplayer and XINE to fully work on the PS3, mainly due to it requiring everything porting over and compiling for the PPC.. some important codecs are still missing.. and there is a distinct lack of decent front end software..

hopefully over the next year or so this may be addressed, I've been wanting to make a linux HTPC for ages, I've got one box I keep upto date with 3 linux distro's and have Mplayer/XINE/VLC, but it doesn't work flawlessy for all media, and development is very slow.. which is why I run XP and Mediaportal as a free media centre style front end.. which allows you to play everything flawlessly.. when the linux catches up, which may take a while, I'll change over to linux, and maybe even run it on a PS3..

Ahh fair do's

I know folk have been runing Linux and watching things without much issues, but there probably is some codec issues.

We've had that going on for ages now, Brilliant bit of kit.

VLC and Linux/PS3 is a fantastic combination.

I'm kinda hoping that the PS3 will bring Linux into the mainstream a bit more so we will get some more user friendly versions coming out.

:( this is what annoys me about it. linux is being dumbed down and linux forums are all being flooded with stupid questions that are answered all over the place these days.
