Hi,

Recently been making some videos out and about. These videos are going to be put on a website, and may contain peoples faces (but low quality, so you can't actually see who they are).

Do i still officially need their permission, even if you can't make out who they are?

Also, if they are talking in the video... do the same rules apply?

cheers

Afaik, they have to be asked for their permission, if they are recognisable. If they are talking in it, unless they said they didn't want to be identified, you can show them. But, it depends by whose rules you are going by.

There seems to be some strickt rules and regulations about this sort of thing nowadays .I was recently told by the Police , I cannot have a security camera pointing into the street , say , looking onto my car .If people walk past and I capture there faces I may be breaking the law.Funny ,they dont ask my permission when there filming me walking in the high street.

In a public place you can legally take a picture of someone or a group of people. However problems can occur with regards to the use of that footage/photo. Say like you photoshop it and post it around the net, like people do. If the person saw that they could sue you for emotional damages. It is generally a good idea to get their permission. It doesn't have to be in the form of a consent form but simply their name and maybe contact number.

Getting everyones name and addy is going to be a bit awkward if you've just taken a street scene . Blooming heck , Have a look at KillinTime's Cork street scene , He's captured a thousand faces in a street ,It's going to take him a year to get everyone's permission .Nice shot though.

Basically we pranked a phone booth and someone picked up, then we made them search for easter eggs round a car park.

You don't really see their face, but hear them clearly.

We got their permission to use the footage on a "TV show", but not to be put online- i guess it still matters?

I'm pretty sure if someones just in the background or making up part of a crowd i.e. not the focus of the picture then your ok to use it. (assuming your on public property). Otherwise surely a lot of people would be in trouble!
