What are those little silver buttons?

As a land surveyor i've put a fair few of these in the ground myself. Basically they just mark a known point for referencing purposes, backsight, station setups etc. If i'm feeling especially lazy, or just need a temporary point, i'll drop a coin on the pavement, or put down a spot of marker paint.
