What are you saving for?

EEEpc/PS3/iPhone v2/new projector lamp

Whatever i need first in summer basically!

Dear God, why would you want an EEEPC?

if it's what I think it is (Asus) then a lady friend has one and it's absolutley ****!
If you know different, please tell me but I can't see why anyone would spend £200 on one of those.

LeBron James Dunkman Air Force 1 trainers, Artful Dodger jeans, a new laptop for next yr uni, basketball shoes and New Era Cap. Can afford the clothes right now if I spent my Uni bursary but I rather save that up so I can use it to pay off some of my loan.

Is it worthwhile for me to get a student loan to just put into a savings account ?

If the savings account is good enough, then yes :)

As I pointed out above, the thing about student loans is that even if you don't make a large profit on them, they are very much a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lay your hands on some very cheap, and extremely safe/affordable credit. Even if you don't need the cash now, it's a great way of building up an ISA fund for later life - especially when you consider the fact that you'll be compounding the interest, tax free, year on year. The bigger you build it, the more benefit you will get from it in the future (due to the yearly limits). I graduated 7 years ago but I've still got a £5k+ loan from SLC outstanding, I could pay it all back but then I'd never be able to get such cheap/safe credit again.

The only time I wouldn't consider taking out the maximum student loan permitted would be in the unlikely case of the RPI reaching a level higher than the net return available on savings.

Because its a good portable linux machine to take to and from uni, and seen as 99% of my time there is sat in terminal/kate whatever coding it fits the bill rather nicely.

Plus not having root on the uni machines is a real pain when trying to mess about with anything fancy, so having your own linux machine with you is of great use!

new monitor, when i get new job will hopfully have enough
driving lessons at some point & finding a place to rent both of these are long term

I’m saving for a new car that I will probably buy at the end of 2009.

I’ve been thinking lately of starting saving towards moving to a nicer house in a few years.

In the short term I need to make sure I have enough money to cover car expenses: Spraying the front bumper ASAP, a service in Sept, 4 new tyres at some point and I’m sure there is more I’ve forgotten!
