What are your 'must have' options / functionality?

The other car i drive is a Civic Type S with many of the features mentioned.

I find cruise control massively annoying due to the other morons on the road who let you go past then overtake then slow down again, plus i often forget to turn it off when i would normally lift off an let engine braking work.

I agree, which is why adaptive cruise control is so much better. :)

My car is pretty well kitted out at the moment, and where as they're all nice to have I don't think any of them are really essential.

I'd sure miss some things though. Cruise control most of all no doubt.

On second thoughts, bluetooth for music from my phone is pretty much essential for me now.

How exactly does this differ by the way? Not sure if my car has it or not.

It uses radar or something to adjust the speed of the vehicle relative to other vehicles in front or within the radar scanning radius (so it'll detect someone pulling in after executing an overtake). I think.

Aircon is the only real must have for me. Sitting in traffic on those rare occasions and baking my backside off is not really on.

The ST has some nice-to-haves auto wipers, auto lights, rear view dimming mirror is amazing and all cars should have this now, dual zone, heated seats. For some daft reason the only thing Ford didn't spec on the early ST was cruise control!

I for one hate a multi function wheel. Much prefer a stalk behind the steering wheel for my fingers to operate rather than having to move my thumbs. Drives me nuts in the SLK.

Wife's MINI specing gave me this sort of decision real life. Junked heated seats... Although I think i regret that as the seats are cold and they heat up fast unlike jap cars.

HID... Essential, work as a safety function and reduced driver fatigue IMO.
Don't really care for cruise unless Adaptive but it comes with multifunction steering wheel option.
Bluetooth phone I would now consider essential as long as sensible implemented.
Reverse camera.
Auto lights and wipers....great but not a key spec IMO.
I think I prefer electric handbrakes aswell as they free up so much console space,

I love cooling seats aswell in the Jags, far more useful that heated seats. Also solar glass to reduce IR in the cabin and hence comfort.

It's hard really to choose isn't it! Soon adds costs!

Air con is useful all year round in the UK

Agreed Air con is a must, we usually have ok summers that are warm/hot, been stuck in heavy traffic or motorway driving wherr having a window open is not a nice experiance air con comes into its own. Not a nice experiance arriving somewhere been all sweaty, been cooled and refreshed is perfect, also in the winter and when it rains the air con demists the windows in no time.

How can you say its only an good option in warmer places? Load of rubbish.

A good stereo with bluetooth, MP3 and USB is a must for me, makes a journy more enjoyable.

Aircon is a must too.

Not really bothered about much else I dont think.

Had heated seats auto wipers lights, climate etc in my other cars and have had a v6 so not fussed about engines, as long as its safe and full of airbags its good with me!

I've lived without some of these in the past but I'd consider all of these now as essential in a single/primary car. I'd probably compromise on some in a second car:

Auto wipers,
Auto lights,
Bluetooth phone integration,
Climate Control,
Cruise Control,
Factory Sat Nav,
Heated Leather Seats,
Reasonable audio stuff (iphone/ipod/usb integration),
Xenons.

I think Air Con and decent* speakers with aux/usb input are the only 'musts'. Possibly cruise control as I do use it often on motorways, I would however like adaptive cruise control.
I can see why auto wipers are very good and wouldn't mind them in my next car. I have bluetooth and very rarely use it so could live without it, all music and navigation I use my phone for so something like iDrive isn't a must but it does look lovely.

Heated seats etc. are all nice but could live without them.

* I find the speakers in my 2013 Polo decent enough. I get in my mates A3 which is like 10 years old and I couldn't have them in my car.

Why?

Your in a car not an airplane. Drive it! :)

I've had the rock hard, quick, noisy, lairy car to drive but now have a very comfortable, quiet car that's a real pleasure to be in. As a result, I'm a much calmer driver and less prone to getting uptight with morons on the road, it's a far more civilised way of travelling. The XJ is awesome and I love all the toys but then I am getting old and lardy :D

Must be fun in a carwash :-P

To be fair, the BMW implementation isnt great, unfortunately i have this setup on my E46 and RR.

I dont know about Honda, but the way merc do it for example, is that if the wipers are on, they are on. They will wipe if it rains and not wipe if it doesn't. They also dont have the stupid manual sensitivity adjustment, they just learn based on your input until the sensor sensitivity is perfect then you never need to touch them again.

Obviously you just turn them off for washing :p

A footrest for my clutch foot.

Yes! Glad I'm not the only one that feels lost without this.

For me it has to be the foot rest, air con (don't really care about climate), bluetooth and a reasonable sound system. Don't really need the rest.

Ohh and cup holders in usable places that actually take decent sized bottles and cups. Why some manufacturers put them in the armrests completely baffles me.
