What are your thoughts on the future of pubs/restaurants etc?

We need to just build a few reactors and be done with this nonsense.
Yep, short term build reactors. Long term more solar/wind/other renewables. And most importantly storage systems. We need grants and/or interest free loans to commercial and residential for installation of solar and battery systems.

Fat chance Sunak or Truss will do much for that though.

Now it will be much higher but you should always have been accounting for energy costs in your product cost/pricing.

Presumably at least some businesses will add a generic markup to the cost of materials/ingredients to take account of the various expenses they need to cover. Perhaps so far they don't specifically factor in that (say) the slow roast lamb uses a lot more energy than the tuna salad and that this may change. Red star menu items have a surcharge based on today's energy prices...

You will be amazed how many empty small new build business units that are dotted all over the country with solar pv not connected to the grid due to the owners not having a meter installed till they get a tennent

Sorry but pubs, restaurants are low down on priority’s for us.

A decent meal for me and my wife is the equivalent to half a weeks shopping, it’s just hard to justify with things the way they are.

I've never mentioned this before on here but my main hobby for the last 52 years has been gigging with different bands in different venues :)
It's now come to the point that I think in a years time because of the cost of living and heating crisis I may have nowhere to play even if I offered my services for nothing.
Talking to 2 Landlords recently who said their electric/gas is £1000 a week and it could go up to £4000 which they won't be able to afford to stay open.
Me and the wife usually have a meal out, a takeaway and go watch a band once a week but come next year all that could stop because of the crisis, other usual punters will be in the same state so therefore most venues will be empty and have to close.

In my opinion it's looking bad for the leisure industry, I hope I'm wrong, I usually am.

Was saying to some friends recently that if people's monthly bills are going to have increased by £500 a month, then that will take away money being spent on anything leisurely/socially. Pubs/bars/restaurants/cinemas/gyms etc.

For a lot of companies that are only just recovering after the pandemic this is going to be another big blow that will finish off a number of businesses.

It hasn't been worth eating at chain pub/food places for ages. Why pay £20 to have to travel somewhere and ignore someone's kids, when you can just make something premium yourself for under £10 with no hassle? Same applies to takeaways, makes no sense. Should not exist.
What a joyless individual you sound :p
Just because you don’t enjoy it doesn’t mean others can’t :)

I personally love going to restaurants and countryside pubs to eat (I don't really drink alcohol). It's one of the pleasures of living in the countryside and going into London. Gastronomy, fresh produce and seasonal flavours.

I'd be really sad if this comes to an end. Of course I don't go out as often as I used to, less than once a week now, but not having that option would be really sad.

I don't think it will end. I think there's enough business to keep a lot afloat but I can see there being a lot less smaller independent places and more chain owned places as a result which again is a shame.

Yeah I can't see it vanishing. There will still be a proportion of people who can still afford to eat out etc, so a small demand will still exist.

I can just imagine we'll see lots of businesses close, and then in a few years once hopefully this has all settled down, and people start having spare income again, then we'll start to see new businesses.

Shouldn't exist because you don't enjoy it?

In an economic sense... the economy should make some things exist and some things not exist based on the value they offer. Food at a pub costs a lot, and isn't particularly good food, and they claim you pay for the experience but they experience isn't particularly good either.

You need to be more selective about where you go. There’s loads of pubs on my doorstep but only a couple I’d eat at, for example.

I get annoyed that every time I visit my mum and go see my sister, she wants to go to a pub that is generally £16+ for a main course. It’s a chain, it’s 100% all microwaved and the atmosphere is just.. odd. I figure why go there when there are some great country pubs just that little bit further with award winning food etc.

It’s like the conversation about cinemas dying. Don’t go to your Cineworld in a Friday night to watch a marvel film and get annoyed with the teenagers. Pay £2-3 more and go to an independent on a Wednesday night where you can take drinks in and they show decent films that don’t attract the morons.

All I'm seeing here is "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist", a comment very indicative of either a bitter, arrogant or stupid attitude.

It depends on what you're after. We go to nice places that we all enjoy, and have food we normally wouldn't cook at home. It's an experience. Avoiding chains and going to better quality places would be worth trying - depends on where you live of course,.

Heck during the summer hols this year, we went into London to China town (cheaper than seeing the family in Malaysia! :D ) to have some high quality dim sum - sure it was a bit of a trek and a little expensive, but it was hugely enjoyable and we made a day of it. And with the kids we were able to go to have a day out and so on.

Locally there are some lovely country pubs here we go as not only do they have stuff for kids, they make really good locally sourced foods - we avoid some places that we don't like, and never go to chain places.

The experience and service we get is always top notch - but that comes from experience and giving things a try.

It's all subjective. It must bring some decent enjoyment to some else they wouldn't exist.

I've eaten at some nice restaurants that don't cost the earth. I'm less about the atmosphere/decor of the place (a nice view certainly doesn't go amiss) but more about the social aspect - enjoying the company of the people I eat out with.

But then you might as well say cancel football?
I hate football. Over paid, boring etc etc.

If we got rid of everything anyone didn't personally like we wouldn't have anything

They knocked down the local pub earlier in the year. Half a dozen terrace hutches going on it.
The only bit I'll probably miss is the snooker/pool side room as it was almost always empty (usually a couple old boys on the snooker)

As for the pub itself I remember there being a saying "never drink in a flat roof pub" and they weren't far off the mark it was a hole
Deserved to be flattened the owners purposely ran it down for years because they knew the land value

Its going to be tough to get through the next few years for sure. I own two Restuarants/Cafe Bistro.

A friend has just had to close his chippy due to the cost of oil its gone up 3 fold. (hence all the waste oil thefts)

Getting Chef's is an absolute nightmare too. Too many BS CV's out there so you waste so much time sifting through the microwave techs to find an actual chef.
Margins are getting tighter and tighter and we are fighting not to increase our prices, But its a battle were going to have to lose in order to stay afloat.
Luckily I have another successful business that can help support if needed.

At what point would you call it a day? How bad would it have to get?
