I just purchased the 5700X3D from the east. I need a B450 motherboard. Its for my son in law's first computer.
I've taken bits from my old computer like the DDR4 Ram, 1TB NVME and a 650w PSU.

The motherboard needs to have WIFI but other bits I'm not requiring high on the list other than being as cheap as possible. The computer is being built on a budget hence the reason why the older platform.

Thanks

How cheap are we talking? There's a lot of sales on B450/A520 motherboards at the moment which are very cheap, but B550 isn't bad either.

The 5700x3d isn't a power hog, so even the cheapest AM4 boards will run it. I've previously bought a couple of A320 boards from the east...they have all been working flawlessly for over a year now, and each board cost less than £35 shipped.

I've not looked into A320 so will expand my choices. As for budget I was thinking brand new approx £80-£100.
You want a b550 ideally to take advantage of pcie4 .

You can get the Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 for£100 .

Be careful with b450 and a320 unless they have bios flashback feature aa they may not hav the correct bios for the 5700x3d ,

Yes i saw a few comments when watching a few videos. How do get this working if the motherboard i end up buy supports the 5700x3d?
Would I get compatibility with the B450 motherboards or would it be down to revision numbers?

Some motherboards have a bios flashback process, would I use this to get the latest bios installed to get the 5700x3d working?

Bios flashback will allow you to update the bios using a usb flash drive with the correct bios on. As you don't know what bios version is on a motherboard then your gambling, even more so with older boards unless you have this feature or access to another CPU.

The motherboard I suggested has this feature call Q flash plus but it may already have the correct bios.

MSI bios flashback example.

i wouldn't spend that much on an AM4 motherboard nowadays. old tech.

5700x3d (£125 which is what i think you'd have paid), £80 b550, £50 32gb ddr4 = £255

and just for comparison...
7500f (£95 from the east), £90 b650m hdv/m.2, 32gb ddr5 6000 (£70 or even less if you get this from the east) <= £255

so, you'd get a newer build with equivalent gaming performance (outside of select titles such as MSFS and MMORPGS) for the same-ish price
the only way that 5700x3d makes any financial sense is if the build is as cheap as possible

Used A320/B450 motherboard might not have stock compatibility OR flashback, so you'd be stuck if you don't have an older CPU available.

Flashback was a lot more common on B550 than B450 and B550 is more likely to have "out of the box" compatibility anyhow.

If the motherboard has a II or V2 in the name, that's more likely to have the BIOS update.

I know what you are saying, the build is a relatively cheap build. Its for my stepson and we want to build it together so knowing I have a fresh box motherboard with all the accessories gives me that confidence it will be all there to fire up. We will be likely doing the build on Christmas day. I have 16GB of my old ram (DDR4) so the B550 is the option i'm going for.

@Schizophonic fair enough.
Fwiw the boards from china do come with the io shield and sata cables and m.2 screw, all in a generic cardboard box.
You could always pre-test the build beforehand.

Looks like you're sorted - Any motherboard would work for that CPU but agree with the others, BIOS Flashback is a must have.

BIOS flashback is one of those features that every motherboard should have since it can help save a failed BIOS update - you don't need to send it back to the retailer/manufacturer and they don't have to spend money handling the RMA.

It saved my X570 Tomahawk when I borked the BIOS.

The Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite AX V2 mentioned above is your best option for B550. I have the non wifi version paired with a 5700X. Not had any issues with it (Bought it June 2023).

I wouldn't be comfortable running a 105w CPU on a a320.

How are the bios updates on the Chinese mobos? I appreciate the am4 socket is eol but out of curiosity. I looked to see if there was an update for sinkhole from a Chinese brand, I couldn't find one. The major players seem to have released an update.

You can easily run a midrange AM4 CPU on any AM4 motherboard.

Even a 5950X isn’t that demanding on the VRMs.

Even if it is demanding, just point a 120mm fan at the VRMs and it’ll be all good.

Can’t speak for the Chinese motherboards and I wouldn’t expect them to be truthful about their VRM config so yeah, I’d just get a used B450 Tomahawk on the cheap instead.
