What batteries...

Have you looked at finding some high amp Lithium-Ion batteries (Li-On) that are possibly rechargeable? I think they have a long life on them, although there are people in here that know loads more about this kind of stuff than me!
What capacity batteries do you use? (and how many?) Also, assuming it takes AA batteries? Go for some rechargeable batteries with the highest capacity that you can afford for the price you're willing to spend. Myself, I have 4 x uniross sprint 2100mAh batteries, which cost £40 with the charger. Takes 15 minutes to charge, and have a respectable life. There is a chance that the camera is just power hungry though. Do you use it for occasional shots or many continuously? Continuous shooting will drain the batteries faster, but you may find they aren't flat if you put them in again later. On the other hand if it's over long periods of time, the batteries may discharge slowly if left in the camera.
My family has a Canon A85. We use two sets of 2000/2300 mAh Ni-Mh Uniross rechargeables and a Uniross fast charger. Ni-Mh discharge themselves quickly when not in use, so we usually put them on charge before we need to use the camera. Fully charged, they last far longer than alkalines.
Get yourself some high-capacity Ni-Mh rechargeables and a decent fast charger, and remember to charge the batteries before you want to use the camera. Ni-Cds hold their charge for longer, but are lower capacity. Regardless of which ones you use, make sure you usually remove the batteries from the camera when not in use as the Canons recharge their internal battery when the power's off, so the main batteries will drain (keep them in every now and then so the internal doesn't go dead).
2300s will provide plenty of power... but only if they're charged. 
Only way to solve the problem if you're only using the camera occasionally is to charge the batteries before you want to use them, as they'll likely be completely dead (even if taken out the camera).

I use 4 Ni-Mh 1700mAh with my E-10 and that eats juice. As said, Ni-Mh batteries lose their charge quickly over time.
Get yourself some 2300mAh with a fast charger. To keep their life it's always good practise to let them discharge fully before a full recharge.
With my batteries I use a slow mains charger (8 hours ish) and usually put them on 2-3 times before I use them and they last a good while, even when left in the camera for a week or two, but it's best to use them fully then recharge fully. I always have about 3 sets. Two sets precharged recently before use and I use whats left of the set already in the camera.
