What book are you reading...

Just finished escape from auschwitz by Andrey pogozhev. An account of a russian pow's time spent in the camp and the horrors he witnessed, and how he managed to escape and eventually testify against some of the perpetrators.

Read my mind. Almost finished the last book and my god he's written some drivel. Could have been so good, but so much of it has been complete nonsense.

To be fair I thought the last book was good. The ending I thought suited a long epic and kind of reflects what we might be going through in the last minutes of our lives.

I still think book 2 is the best of the lot, you go through the rest hoping it will be as good, book 5 is. The series like a lot of Kings stuff gets under the skin and you end up thinking about it in quiet moments.

As an author he really is and acquired taste though, and can understand how people don't get him.

Got the Kennedy book to read and then the dark tower book is out this year.

I think I started to get annoyed when he brought himself into the books, and then the last book, Patrick Danville appears for maybe the last two chapters, despite having a massive massive impact on the entire story, it was ridiculous.

I've read a large amount of zombie books just lately, so I've shifted my attention to 'I, Partridge' and soon, to 'Conquerer' by Conn Iggulden. Have enjoyed the previous Conquerer series so I'm looking forward to this one.

Just finished reading The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester and should be finishing I, Partridge at lunch today. I was really impressed by The Stars My Destination. I thought it might show it's age given that it's a sci-fi novel from the 1950s, but such is the strength of the characters any niggles about it feeling dated are easily ignored. As for I, Partridge, it's as funny as I hoped it would be and the footnotes and soundtrack are perfect!

Not sure where to go next, January is always rich pickings after getting plenty books for Christmas!

Im just about to start reading "boomerang" by Michael Lewis. Hope it helps with part of my degree!

Is this the one about the role the Europeans played in everything? Apparently it's pretty good.

Incidentally, I just picked up Moneyball by him yesterday. Sports + Stats = :D

It is great, but I would say it probably has tbh. Most sci-fi from around that time has imo(note I say most)

I read Gateway by Frederrik Pohl and Babel-17 by Samuel Delaney recently and they also feel a bit dated imo.
Rendezvous With Rama on the other hand hasn't aged at all, I loved it.

I have pretty much run out of decent sci-fi now, I am thinking of starting Flowers for Algernon tonight as it has been on my shelf for ages, anyone read it?

Just bought 16 Stephen King books, inc the whole of the dark tower series (so far). Single buggest haul I have ever bought myself in one go!
So I will be reading these for a couple of months!

I have "I shall wear midnight" by Terry Pratchett to read then I am out :p

Thinking of investing in the Julian May books. Can anyone recomend them? They sound really good.

Also missing a few Horus Heresy I will pick up and thinking of getting further into Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallender series!

Just finished the second book, The Fall, in the vampire apocalypse trilogy by Guillermo Del Toro, and just started the third and final book in the trilogy , The Night Eternal

Is that the series that starts with 'The Strain'? Looked at that on Amazon earlier, though it has very mixed reviews.

How have you found them?

Got Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson and ASoIF: Dance with Dragons for Christmas, loved Alloy of Law, a very worthy follow up to his Mistborn series. Eager to see more. I found the magic system from the first series to be very well implemented into the now Wild West feel without compromising it or making it feel any less powerful with the advent of firearms and such. Also trains, **** yeah.

Currently getting to the closing chapters of Dance with Dragons, theres now more claimants to the various thrones than I know what to do with :( Still love it however. I can't help but really like Tyrion.

Before Christmas I had decided to re-read Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis. I had quite forgotten how unsettling he had made it at times, and how completely hilarious it was. Very fun read. Tantric ostrich sex orgies for the luls

Please trawl the web for the best one to read first. Get one of his bad ones and it will put you off for life. Start with The Stand or anything before then The Shining, Salem's Lot Carrie. And don't attempt to read them all in short space of time. Do this he is a good writer and tells a good story.

Also his short story books are probably better than a lot of this main stuff. The recent Full Dark, no Stars was excellent.

I just finished Alloy of Law this week and was also very pleased by it. Was a little short and ended rather abrubptly but then it was never meant to be a sequal to the Mistbourne Trilogy. Those are comming later. Two Trillogy's if I remember correctly. I love the magic system in the Mistborn series it works really well and makes for very engaging reading during hectic battle scenes.

I finished the Hyperion Quartet just after New year and it is hands down the best piece of SF and probably the best piece of fiction I have ever read. I was blown away from start to finish. The characters, pacing, scale all were spot on and some of the concepts behind it all were mind boggling. Never meen moved so close to tears by any fictional work either. I thoroughly enjoyed it although the size of the omnibus editions read were daunting and rather heavy to hold.

I have just started Elantris, the first book by Brandon Sanderson. I am a little underwhelmed to be honest and am around 1/4 the way through. It just doesnt seem to be goiung anywhere yet. I hold out hope that it will pick up before the end.
