Chrome isn't bad, it does use a fair bit of RAM however...

I did actually look at the memory footprint of Chrome and it seemed about the same as IE8. Everyones mileage may vary of course.

I have about 50 tabs open and I'm using about 270MB for Chrome.

Doesn't matter how many tabs you have open. You could have 500MB taken up with a single tab depending on the page content.

Actually the number of tabs make a big difference as Chrome spawns new processes with the tabs that have overheads.

exactly
this why it's "faster" IE7 has one process to rule them all. if one page dies they all do, chrome can crash once for each tab!
