What cable router without wireless ?

Thanks for the reply but i've just been told that i will need a gigabit router when VirginMedia upgrade to 50Mb internet in the new year is that true ?

Just got an Email from Netgear.

"For such fast internet connections, we recommend that you buy business class products. The FVS114 will have the firewall throughput you need to support a 20Mbps connection."

From the specs it has 100Mb WAN as opposed to 10Mb WAN on most other routers.

That's a lie - Netgears business gateways are incredibly underspecced. Here's the datasheet:

http://www.netgear.co.uk/pdfs/FVS114_DS.pdf

Throughput: Up to 11.5 Mbps WAN-to-LAN,
up to 2.1 Mbps for 3DES throughput
In other words, it sucks. I hate to sound like some sort of Linux fanboy but your best bet is to get a nice small PC from the Pentium 3 era, put two proper NICs in (like Intels) and run m0n0wall on it.

Edit: Or buy a Juniper Netscreen of some description.

WAN to LAN is 53Mbs according to Small Net Builder's router chart for the WRT54GL. You could pay over the odds for a GB wan based router now or buy a GL and save some money for 12 months time when you actually need one, by that time they'll more than likely be cheaper/better anyway.

chong

do speedtest.net with & without router

Seems the router is fine and it was Virgins fault as for the last 3 days I've been getting the same results from Speedtest. It was down to 2mb at times before and never seemed to go above 8mb, hence me thinking my router wasn't upto the job.
