I droppped my sony f717 last week, and damaged the lense. I've spoken to the insurance company about it and they will replace it with a new one upto the original value which was 700. So what are my options, what should I be looking out for?

Thansk :)

Another one of these!

Go to the shop and buy the canon or nikon that you like the feel of most.

End of thread :) :p

If you like Sony Cams then check out the Sony DSC-R1, it's a few cameras down the line from the 717 and is currently regarded at the best fixed lens 'point & shoot'. The sensor is the same size as Canon's 350D, 30D etc (1.6x crop) and therefore high ISO produces low noise. The Carl Zeiss lens is also excellent :)

Other than that a D-SLR is the way to go - Canon 350D or Nikon D50.

350D produces quite low noise because its processed by the camera.
Sony is more expensive but way better. Olympus & Panasonic make a much better cam.
350D will get recommended most times. Not based on how it performs but the fact most people have bought into it.
Remember you are bying into a system not just the cam.

R1 is a great deal but only if you're happy with the lens range 24-120mm. The 350d or D50 will cost more when you factor in two decent lenses, but if you need a wider or longer range then they are a better choice.

As I do a fair amount of sports photog (windsurfing, sailing and rugby) the 120mm would be about 4-5x too short ;-)

The F717 is not Digital SLR...the original poster has not suggested he wants a Digital SLR or in fact to head down that system. To me something the Sony DSC-R1 is a far more sensible suggestion until we get more details.

if you want to jump into slr cameras then i reccommend the 350d, my first slr and i think its brilliant, very easy to use.

Looks like the 350 is the clear favourite here with you guys. I liked the Sony camera as it allowed my to just point and shoot most of the time but also gave me the opportunity to have a play with the various settings on the odd occasion

Not sure what the difference is between the sony and a d-slr, anyone care to explain?

there is no comparison, none whatsoever. The Sony has a fixed lens, and may well peform as good as a 350D and bog lens, but once you decide to buy a proper lens the peformance would make the Sony look like a toy TBH.

Until i bought a proper lens i never thought the 350D capable of producing sharp, detailed images, but boy was I wrong.

Basically the dSLR is like buying a PC over a laptop, you aren't fixed with one product and you can upgrade as funds become available :)
