£10k, fun, reasonably sensible and not a bomb to run. (Im 21, student, going on placement next year).

Something around the 2ltr mark, 35+ mpg?

Thanks.

Hadn't thought of that one, thank you.

170BHP in diesel form. Will do 40+ mpg. 200BHP in petrol form. Will do 35+ mpg. Saloons or estates in both forms. The mk1s can be had for peanuts and will leave you a lot of money for tuning, if they haven't been already.

10k for car and a student of 21.

Boy how things have changed, lol. Most of us at your age were orgasmic at the thought of a Mk1 Fiesta 1.3 supersport 25 years ago.

I bought a Lancia Delta 1.6 Turbo IE and paid less on insurance than the XR2 boys ;)

10k was a dream more like 2k at the time no more than 5k now.

Spend £5k on a 330i. Fun, good looking, everything you want, but £5k not £10k. That spare £5k will come in far, far more handy after your placement than £5k more of car will.

But 2k then is probably the equivalent of 10k now.

2011 BMW 120d SE, 42k, new alloys, serviced at 35k last year. thoughts? Running costs are low, how often do you think they need servicing?

In terms of serving its probably every 12K-15K miles. Im sure you can look it up online. I think there are certainly more fun cars for the money however there is certainly nothing wrong with it.
Make sure it comes with lots of toys otherwise it will not hold its value and youll get bored quickly as the car itself will not be the quickest.
Insurance I imagine will be high considering your age.

Haha I know what you mean, but its faster/more powerful than the car I have previously been driving.

And insurance is £650, which is the lowest I've seen with a car of this value

Would the other £5k not be needed to keep it going?

I'm considering a 330i for my next car, but thought they were a no no as you needed to fund heavily to keep them running?

Fox has answered your question, bear in mind he bought his 530i at a similar age to you, half your budget buys a very nice example with plenty left to run it comfortably.

A 120d will use less fuel, sure, but I doubt you do the miles to warrant a diesel anyway.

You may pay a bit more in insurance & fuel but IMO you'll still save overall and have a really enjoyable car , never mind a car the average 21 year old student would die for!

Another 325i owner here, which is a hoot to drive, I'd not rule it out either although it's no cheaper to run than a 330i, that said, I paid £1550 for mine and it's not (yet) bankrupted me!

The costs of running a 325 / 330 is often IMO blown out of all proportion to reality, use a decent independent for servicing rather than dealers and your not looking at massively higher costs than many other cars IMO.

I've owned a long line of 6 pot BMW's, my current 325 is 14 years old, I've never spent over £1k per year on any of them in service and repair costs.

Closest I came was my e38 728i which cost me about £900 one year which comprised of a major service, repaired exhaust bracket and two rear tyres.

Use a main dealer any you'll pay through the nose mind you!

Im not sure how far I'm going to be traveling each day, as I'm going on placement and don't know where ill be living, but the weekday journeys won't be far, just weekend ones to the girlfriend.

Id love a 330 convertible! However some of the funding is coming from my dad, and he wouldn't consider helping out if thats what I had in mind.

Theres 2007 325I SE with 27k, 19" wheels for £8k, which I had been looking at, however the tax jumps up £175, and mpg pretty much halves, and I think its on boundaries of what my dad would consider reasonable.

I guess it could be outweighed by the 2 grand price difference, but then its 4 years older. But then would that make much difference seeing as the mileage is a lot lower?
