Hello, I have a e8400 cpu 3ghz. What could I upgrade this to as my processor is now about 2 years old. I do not want to replace the mobo as I did this last time. Any thoughts on this please.

It's a decent CPU unless you really need to go for a quad core for some reason (certain games/applications etc). Q6600 is the socket 775 'value for money' quad core atm or Q9550 if you want to splash out a bit.

edit - you'll need to post the model number of your motherboard to check which cpus are compatible though.

I can get 4.6ghz overclock pretty much after that the machine does not boot. Do i need to be buying a bigger cooler fan for my e8400 in order to get above 3.6 My mobo is a gigabyte ep45-ds3. I also got 2x2gb ddim ddr2 pc2-6400u which i would like to overclock too is this possible?

As already mentioned - best "bang per buck" option just now would be to pick up a Q6600 and clock it to @3.2-3.6Ghz depending on it's VID and your other components ( RAM, Mobo type etc ).

I reckon a Q6600 will be more than capable to use over the next couple of years as far as gaming performance goes and most certainly with other applications and progs.

i tried the 425 and 1.3v as suggested but my computer did a blue screen of death lol and dumped it somewhere to my hard drive. Would anyone be able to make head of tail of the dump? if so where do i locate the dump file lol.

If the E8400 is two years old i am guessing it is one of the Original C0 steppings which where not as good clockers as the newer E0 steppings. If your cpu is the older stepping it will need higher volts for a given clockspeed. Do not go over 1.45v!! 1.4v and below is preferable though. What cooler do you have?

What ram are you running? As you increases the fsb you are also increasing the ram speed. If it's PC2-6400 then 425mhz may be enough to make the pc bluescreen.

the cpu is about 2years old but i chose a version that was good to clock. the memory is 2x 2gb dimm DDR2 PC2-6400u Again this memory was called something gold from OC and again made to be over clocked. I am not sure what the numbers in the bios for the memory should be I got it at 5 5 5 5 15 or something? no idea if that is correct ? The cooler is the standard cooler i had with the cpu. Is there a non expensive good cooler that will fit the 775 socket?

True, but the freezer 7s are the best bang-for-buck coolers with a proven record under £20, Fenrir under £30, under £40-45 it's swings and roundabouts - depends on the fan you fit really.

To be fair, it keeps my stubborn chips cores at ~52c in the summer heat without sounding like the hoover that the Fnerir is, comes with MX-2 applied (saving afew quid) & fits 6 sockets. Can't get better value for money really, which is half the point over over-clocking isn't it :)

Is it a C0 or E0 stepping though? CPU-z will tell you.

If you set the fsb to 425mhz then your ram was running out of spec which is more than likley why it bluescreened. Go into the bios and lower the ram speed by changing the multiplier. Get your ram part number and look it up on OCZ's website to find the correct timings and voltage.

You will need a better cpu cooler and the cheapest one i would get would be the F7Pro ver 2 as posted above.
