What can my PS3 do?

First of all, apologies if this has been asked a million times. I have read through numerous forums and have seen plenty of posts on the subject but most go over my head.

I have a 40Gb PS3 and from what I have read, it can be used as a "media box". Here's what I want to do after installing a bigger HDD:
  • Put all my MP3s onto the HDD and play them through the PS3 with an output to an amp.
  • Be able to create playlists with my MP3s, shuffle tracks etc...
  • Do the same with videos

Can the PS3 do this as it is or will I need Linux? To install Linux do I need a keyboard & mouse? If so, do they have to be bluetooth or is wireless USB ok? Does Linux support the wireless networking function? Will I be able to access my PC via the network to copy files across?

If I don't need Linux, what do I do to get all the above to work?

Bare in mind that I'm a complete noob with all of this so your patience will be appreciated if this turns out to be simpler than I actually think it is :p

Thanks.

The PS3 will do what you want with MP3s but not with videos. There is no video playlist feature. Sorry I have no info on LInux as I haven't used that.

To get your MP3s on the PS3, you can copy them across using a USB HDD or copy them from Windows Media Player on your PC.

Basically as above, for video files the most compatible format is divx (.avi files generally), if you want HD stuffs your best bet is to get videos encoded as .vob.

You can also stream via TVersity.

Its very simple to use aswell. Thought it would take me an age to set it up, but only a few clicks and it was done!

So I'm guessing the fans are spinning the other way in that fan test?

Why would they be spinning the other way?

The fan in the PS3 isn't like a PC fan with the blades concave, it's like a fan on a graphics card pushing hot air over the heatsink. Check out PS3 Disassembly on Youtube.

Tried this last night and wow, the noise of the thing! I know the sound quality on Youtube is a bit crappy, but it sounds like a jet taking off. :D

Thanks for the info. I have just managed to get the MP3s streaming from my laptop but I reckon I'll transfer them over to the PS3 HDD.

Is it possible to transfer them over the wireless network or do I have to use a USB HDD or pen drive?

You should be able to copy them using the Triangle button. Only problem is that you can't copy multiple items this way (if memory serves me correct).

Navigate to the folder (through your PS3) containing the music you wish to copy to your PS3's HDD, press 'triangle' on your sixaxis controller and there you should have a 'copy' option and a 'copy multiple' option, select the option that best suits your needs and your music will be automatically copied to your PS3's HDD via your network.
