What car did you learn to drive in? Shocked to see what learners are now driving...

I think people should learn in something similar to what they'll actually drive.

I learnt in a Corsa. A common first car at the time.

These days I think everyone should be learning in an ev. Something like a leaf or zoe they have a chance of affording.

Early 00’s 208 and a Clio. I saw a Focus ST learner car this week!

I learnt in a brand new 2001 Golf GTi.

I was the first student to drive it, had 312 miles on the clock.

I learnt to drive in a Metro in 1992 and once passed my test got a Mk4 Escort 1.3 as my 1st car, it was terrible with rampant rust, a leaky after market sunroof and constant breaking lights\indicator stalks, kept it 1 year and then swapped to a Mk2 Golf Syncro 1.8

Vauxhall Corsa, one of the original ones, petrol with power steering from memory.

I went from that to a Vauxhall Corsa diesel with no power steering, that was nearly impossible to stall even on hill starts but was very heavy on the steering especially at lower speeds.

My first driving "lesson" was in a BMC FG lorry around Newlyn harbour car park in 1984. I then went on to a proper driving school, Peter Trahair driving school of Penzance who gave me a initial lesson and booked my test straight away. I had just a couple of further lessons, one of which was directly before the test and passed first time. The driving school car was a Peugot 205 diesel. I then bought my first car, a Ford Cortina Mk4 1.6L which cost me just £180 a year to insure, a vast difference to the rip off insurance prices new drivers have to pay today.

But the wages back then was something like £80 per week

I remember paying £800 for my 600cc motorbike insurance in 1989 (19 years old) and think my wages were around £100 per week then

I think insurance these days is cheaper vs wages then it used to be or at least not much difference

Learned in a diesel Peugeot 205 - first car was a 1.1 Peugeot 205, so quite transferrable :D

Passed in a Ford Fiesta MK 1 in 1985.

Had already held a full motorcycle license for 2 years was basically just learning road positioning, reversing and parallel parking in a manual car. Had already been driving my dad’s Renault 20 automatic under his supervision for a few months, so using the wrong appendages for gear changing, starts and hill starts was my weak areas.

Driving instructor was a mate of my dad’s, a mad Italian who’d whack my left hand or left leg with a wooden ruler when they were doing the wrong thing. Had 5 lessons with rapidly decreasing use of the ruler and passed first time.

The 1980s really were a very different time to be alive.

mini clubman estate 1971 vintage ...
mum had it new and i passed 88 ish then progressed to a mk1 1967escort 1.3 gl:)

My instructor's car was a Rover Metro. Also learned in my parent's car - a 1.8L Ford Sierra.
