300 is quite a lot for a headunit, thats moving into tv territory, why not spend 100 and drop the rest on speakers etc. Unless you need a dvd player etc. 100 quid will get you a decent one with mp3 and usb port if you wish, might even get an sd card based one for a tad more.

£300 will get you a Becker grand prix. It's not a flashy unit but they sound sweet. If sound quality is important to you then have a look at it but if you want something that looks like a mobile disco then it's not for you.

Really??? I'd have said it was 'just' moving into good quality Pioneer / Alpine stuff. I remember I spent around £600 on my first 'proper' pioneer HU, the one with no built in amp and pure source.

The JVC AVX1 is a decent headunit and should be available for around the £300 mark.

It plays DVDs, CDs, DVDs full of MP3s and you can connect an iPod to it (through adaptor)

I got a Pioneer P80MP to replace my 2 year old DEH-P3600MP.

They're both at opposite ends of the market, with the 3600 retailiing at £130 and the P80 around £270.

Through a set of Infinity reference comps, the difference isn't all that much... however there's definitely an improvement. I expect a big jump in SQ when I amp the speakers.

I'd settle somewhere around the £200 mark. That'll get you something very smart and good sounding. I've heard bad things about Alpine's being too bright, and the ones I've heard have definitely backed this up.

Best thing is to go and have a listen (I did this when choosing speakers) at your nearest Halfords and then buy your chosen player off the Internet.

I'd recommend any of those. I've heard the P55-BT and it's a very nice bit of kit. The bluetooth function is superb.
