What car to buy for use in the snow thread

12 months ago I had a Jeep Cherokee and it didn't snow here at all. Most consider them rubbish but I've always thought selling it was a mistake because I really liked it.

Would have been just the thing in this weather. So I would chose another Cherokee.

I just got rid of my navara which was great in snow and now have a 5 series:rolleyes: I love the 5 series but wish I'd made the change next month!

whilst the disco is capable, its no match for a defender.

is this just based upon reputation ( we all know the defender has the reputation of being no nonsense, purpose built for off roading) is it actually that much better now-a-days than the discovery and the rangerover ?

I know that reputation would dictate the defender is better, but have we got any facts to show the difference in offroading ability of the two ?

which would be better though

the defender or something like the discovery with all the fancy hill descent control electronics etc..

A driver with any skill will be able to replicate, and go beyond most of the functions of all the 'fancy' 4x4s in a Defender. A friend of mine has a 90 with semi-offroad tyres and the amount of traction is has is remarkable. We've been on a fair few green-laning trips and it never fails to amaze me what it can negotiate. And now with the snow, it performs brilliantly.

All you really need is ground clearance, 4WD, low gear ratios, lockable diffs and traction to be fair, but the Defenders seem to be universally recognised and appreciated :D

I've been looking at sub 1.5k 4x4's, so tempted to pick up something like a 1989 - 1992 Range Rover, Jeep Cherokee etc.

I have been looking at the same things, I can't deny my interest has seen a resurgence because of the weather, and I don't much care for being basically house bound, but I was already thinking about this months back, I fancy getting into some off-roading as a hobby, from green-laning to actually going to those purpose built courses where you can blat round and get absolutely covered in muck :D

In the sub £2k price bracket, which is what I have been looking at, you can't really do a Landcruiser, but the Cherokee certainly seems to give you the most for your money, there is some older very hardy looking Japanese machinary around too, like of Isuzu Troopers, Mitsubish Shoguns etc. A Range Rover for that sort of money is going to be pretty much a shed I think, if you find one that works it'd probably cost the same again to actually make it stay that way for a year.

In a way the Disco is actually better as it has very good electronics and the Defender doesn't have as much. Disco has a lot more comfort too. I'd rather have the Defender though personally, love driving my mum's 1991 110 2.5TD i4...such a beast. :D

A flight to California - £500

And then £49,500 on cruising around in a sweet soft-top :p

in true offroad terrain, the defenders main advantages are its clearance, lighter weight and narrower body, allowing a greater tolerance in entry/exit angles. thats essentially what makes it more capable.

disco is far more suitable for everything else though obviously, and as said has electronic aids to help in most terrains. also far better VFM.

Black Defender with all the rollcages/bullbars etc and snow tyres :) Looks great (in a utilitarian way) and is one of the few off roaders/SUVs (sports - really?) I'd actually consider buying.

Like the thinking of the guy who'd get an Escort Cosworth though - if I got the above I could also squeeze something else in budget - how much was that 205 T16 going for in the other thread :D
