ive been asked by a friend he has just bought a 7970...and realised it does not have physix on board ...what sort of nvidia card is best to use....one that is passive cooling would be better....ie 8400...9600...550....620/630 are these any good to use ...thanks

Tell him to go for one of the Ageia Physix standalone PCI cards! :D

(Do not do that, those cards have been unsupported for years and are only useful now as paperweights)

Do people really not bother to do a little research before spending hundreds?

Rhetorical question obviously :D

LOL i did thats why i got the 670....he never asked me i wouldve told him to look into it first....what makes it worse he bought over the counter so cant send it back....

9800Gt bear minimum.

Anything with less than 96 Cores/Stream Processors is not going to cut it.

Best bet is a second hand cheap 460 for best performance/price, but that will rule out going passive.

:)

There's a Hybrid PhysX benchmark thread a few pages back with good info in it, I'm not finding it for you though.;)

Tell him to not bother, it's not worth it.

:o

Your comments not worth it and you went to the bother of posting.

When the op is asking about PhysX=it's wanted.

There's others above as well, but they don't constantly pour down on PhysX.

You don't rate it at all, there is no need to go down the route of it can be done on the cpu, I get it, but there is no need to dump on it every single time.

Soo much needless negativity in the PC gaming scene-both ways, it's shocking.:(

of those listed the 550 would probably be the best, although by this point I think I'm right in saying that (for example) Batman Arkham City suggests a 460 as a dedicated physx card

a lot of people end up with 8800 or 9800's kicking about and try them, but they end up with worse performance than running without a physx card

Im using a Zotac GT 640 and am very happy with it in my Hybrid setup, after the latest patch to borderlands 2 ive been running PhysX on high and its been smooth(finaly). If one would want a dedicated PhysX card from nvidias 600 series I wouldn't recommend going any lower than the gt 640. While some would say that the 500 series is better in this regard I would like to point out that the power consumption on the 640 is less that 75watt and I hardly think any other series can provide the same power/permance ratio as a dedicated PhysX card than the GT 640.
