I edit and capture DV footage so I use my firewire port. :)

I use DVI to HDMI on an HDTV. I prefer to use an MPEG capture card for VHS video work, but that's me. I also use USB2 or Firewire for DV.

Is there a massive difference between a x850xt pe and a x1800xt because there is £100 difference? And what about a 7800GT instead of a 7900GT?

In terms of what? Games, then the ATi's, yes quite a bit. The NV not so much. percentage anyone?

IIRC The NV version of the x850xtpe is the older 6800GTX

For the ATI cards you are comparing two totally different generations so yes huge difference agreed. For the Nvidias you are comparing a comparatively small evolution, the 7900gt will still be a fair bit quicker than the 7800gt and if there isn't much of a price difference(less than £50) I would go for the 7900gt but if you aren't a huge gamer and can get a 7800gt cheaply there is no reason to discount it entirely.

The X850XTPE matches up against the 6800ultra or an overclocked 6800gt but was a little faster than both however didn't support SM3 at all. There wasn't a 6800GTX, the GTX suffix just came with this generation previously it was, in order of speed 6800le, 6800, 6800XT, 6800GT, 6800ultra and then 6800 ultra extreme but they were very rare and stupidly expensive.

Is that aimed at me or the OP or both?. I had an x800xtpe that was a gnats faster than the 6800Ultra (always equated it to gtx, forgot they renamed it) which I also had. Would the 850 be nearer to the 6800Ultra Extreme then or is the extreme still faster? Not that it matters any more, just interested.

Partly at you to give a little more info and partly at Yucca I suppose since you quoted him :)

The X850XT was the same performance as the X800XT(give or take a miniscule amount) but it was easier to produce the chip in greater quantities, I think that part of the reason was that they had just gone to a smaller die size so more chips could be produced that met specification if memory serves.
