I'm after replacing my X1950pro and 19" LG with a LG L226WTQ 22", that leave me with the problem of card?
Don't want a monster that I will not be able to use fully. So which would be best for max res @ 1680 x 1050 and price?
GTS 320
GTS 320 OC
GTS 640
Also what about the HD2900XT
Cheers guys, P

I would definitely say either the 2900 or 640mb gts. Then its a matter of preference, just know that the ATI driver team imo are on top of things compared to the Nvidia side.

or if you play games using headphones then maybe an HD2900xt :p

Since the last couple of driver updates I have found the fan to be a lot quieter than it was when I first bought my card on release, however when I set it on its maximum overclock it does get suprisingly loud!

With the resolution of my 22" screen I havent found a game that the hd2900xt really struggles with yet and I have most settings on high.

Surely the card required depends on whether he is going to game or not. An 8800 640Mb would be overkill for simple browsing, would it not?

Well were going gaming, and have ordered the LG 22" monitor and the BFG 640 OC, as it was on the week special offer.
Ordered this morning, hopefully here tomorrow :D
Let the good times roll.

true! but if used for games..its ideal :D

Is there such thing as "overkill" on the overclockers forum? :D

I thought the only reason to get a 640mb version was for gaming above that resolution.I think the difference between a 640mb and 320mb 8800 @1680 x 1050 will be minimal if not identical correct me if i am wrong ?.

I've had the 320mb + 640mb varients of the BFG 8800 gts and on a lot of games its definitely better to have the 640mb to be on the safe side yet some games which seem to be very cpu intensive like C&C 3 it makes no difference.

did you go from the 320 to the 340?

2900xt! No doubt about it, these new drivers that ATI are releasing are very good and making a far better purchase than the 8800 GTS (640). Far better frames in all apps basically and £30 cheaper.

yea but you need the national grid to run a 2900xt

 what a cheap comment to make when you havent even got the card...

yes its 55watts more than the gts under load but most psus can handle that if they are of a good quality. Anyway it doesnt matter since hes ordered the 640 GTs

Congrats on your new purchase.

I don't know why all these Nvidia boys are defending their purchases?. The x2900 is the better card and STILL improving. Also on top of giving people good advice between the GTS/29xxXT, we would be getting AMD back into the swing of things as if they EVER drop then we are all affected as the PC market will be sooooo slow and expensive  .

GTX and Ultra are still the bad boy gaming kings. Then it's the x2900 then it's 8800GTS 640mb > 8800GTS 320mb. Really that's how it stands so what the hell is the point of all the debating between GTS and X2900?. One card is better, the other one is worse (think about it). Instead of wasting your time trying to win an argument that has already been decided why not phone a friend or family member and see how they are doing. Life's too short.

Well after all that I went for the 640 GTS as was on week special offer, only now not so sure. Mine is BFG OC2 version and it runs bloody hot, and although ATitool is giving it some grief :p

I wouldn't worry too much about that. These cards are all hot. Well just look at the power :D .

I hope I haven't deflated your purchase in any way?. The card you have bought is a great card and kicks the ass of mine. It's just that the X2900 is slightly faster and still improving. The 8800GTS is just short of it though and still a great purchase.

How are you enjoying your new card btw?.

I'm happy, early days yet. Only ordered yesterday and fitted today. Quality OC service as always :D
Running ATi tool to see what gives, although i always do this. but never feel the need to run games on those settings.
Had a blast of Half life 2 earlier and with the new 22" monitor it really does look good and I'm impressed.
so no you haven't steered me in the wrong direction.
Many thanks for all the advice.
