A lad at work just put a insurance claim in for a 980ti that he dropped when cleaning his sons pc.

The insurance company put him in contract with a guy that was supposed to work out the current value of his card.

They decided that a GTX 1660ti would be about the right replacemt and offered him xxx pounds after fee's.

What was the 980ti when it first came out top tear card? At about 500??

Cost/value doesn't come into it with new for old cover - you would get a replacement that offers similar performance/features, not a current £500 card.

How new for old insurance works

It is useful to know how like-for-like replacement works in practice within new for old cover. For example, if you bought an iPhone 6 when it was a top-of-the-range model, the new for old cover will replace it with an iPhone 6 or equivalent, not a current top of the range model at the time of the claim. If the existing model is no longer available and needs replacing under your claim, you'll be given the closest equivalent available as a replacement.

Just asked mum as i have never done this so don't know how it works. But she said new for old is what we have and when she claimed for a 1000 tv after the 100 fee she revived a 900 gift type card but it all depends on the type of cover you have..

I just thought the 1660ti was a bit poo.

New for old should put you back in the same position before the loss. So you should get something no worse than a 980ti.

I am surprised the 1660 is slower but I am out of touch with GPU's. I would go back to them with benchmarks and say it is slower than what you had and is not a suitable replacement.

Yes, of course, but the 1070 is a direct replacement for a 980ti so realistically he can't ask for more.
depends on how OP's friend wants to play the game.
if insurer is paying cash, then go for the 1070 as it's probably more expensive being EOL now. if its a like-for-like replacement (ie insurer buying the gpu) then 2060.

1660Ti looks about right, its the same performance as the 1070. So both are slightly faster than the 980Ti plus you get the turing features such as much better DX12/Vulkan performance, significantly better async performance in games that support it like wolfenstein.

Asking for a 2060 is a bit of a cheek, thats going from under 1070 performance (980ti) to 1080 performance.

They 'accidentally' drop a 4+ year old card and then expects to be paid out the full orginal retail cost :p

And people wonder why insurance premiums are so high.

Just take the 1660ti and run
